Hi all, my door lock barrel 'locks up' more often than not lately, i.e., i can't turn the key clockwise, or anti-clockwise, when it does this i have to open the door from the inside. Any ideas as to what the problem is?. I haven't had time to whip off the door card yet for a look. I presume something is worn and may need replacing or hopefully repairing, ta in advance. p.s, it's a 71 USA prototype.
Do you have a spare key? Although unlikely to be a damaged key you can’t rule it out. Not sure how many tumblers make up the door lock but most will be worn and usually waggling the key is enough to turn it. Or are you thinking it’s more the mechanism in the door jamming?
Take the handle off - the cam on the back of it that operates the lock mech is probably coming loose, it's only held on by a small screw.
Definitely the loose screw - the door handle comes out with two hex socket head bolts from the inside, there are guide holes in the inner door skin allowing an Allen key to get to the heads of the bolts . The lock barrel and lever comes with it, and then its a tweak with a cross head screwdriver.
I'll try not to , i'll stuff rags in to catch them. Reminds me of taking out those tiny headlamp retaining screws, i now put a white sheet down on the floor before i start because once they hit the tarmac they become invisible.
Well, today i finally got around to removing the door card ( only broke 3 clips). removed door handle and just as you guys said, loose cam thingy. Cleaned and lubed everything, plus a smidgen of blue loctite and all is well. Ta again for the info.
