That is the right place on the build plate for the colour code. However the VW SA colour codes are just 2 digits. Yours is obviously much longer :)

The other rather annoying feature of SA buses of this era is they didn’t have the vin number (from the bottom line of the build plate) stamped in the normal place in the engine bay.

Did you mean me ? Only I’m a Pete not a Gary ;)

Anyway, this is my best guess..

Top line 234S indicates this is a RHD Kombi with a left side sliding door.

The EA is the world export destination code, Kisangani, Zaire so probably another German built CKD kit.

The middle line..I don’t recognise the body colour code but it should have originally had a Clifton White roof (sometimes down to the belt line) The 56/56 indicates the seats and interior trim were originally Cognac.

Bottom line..The 23 confirms the body type as a Kombi build date between August 75 and July 76.

The last 6 digits are the sequential build number.

Does any of that chime with what you have ?

That's all good info thank you. I know mine's a 76 for sure now.

I'm sorry Pete, I mixed you up. That is fantastic info, thank you. Yes the V5 says 1/1/76 but I wasn't positive. It fits the bill being a 75. Top half to the belt is white and always has been I think and the bottom used to be a pale butterscotchy yellow. Yes the interior was a mid brown. It was a minibus and as such had had a hard life.
Thanks a million for that, that's all good enough for me.

  7. It appears they did it the South African way!
I’ve heard Fawn mentioned before , so that could be what the 02 means, as I suppose it could be that colour under white as they all appear to be, thanks for that

    Nice ;)

Those small round white reflectors on the front panel are a dead giveaway it’s an SA vehicle.

Unique to SA as far as I know.
