Metal fuel pipe touching manifold

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by DubDan, Aug 6, 2020.

  1. Afternoon all, as the title says, my metal bit of fuel hose through firewall is touching the manifold and getting hot, see pics.
Is this ok as it’s not the rubber part or do I need to try and create a small gap?

Hopefully it’s ok, has been like it since I changed fuel lines last year and have done about 500 miles but thought I’d check as noticed engine was hotter than normal today on a 4 mile test ride before weekend but put it down to a hot day, then noticed very hot metal fuel line.

    Thanks
    Dan

  2. Sorry, dunno why pics rotated..

  3. I personally make a point of never having anything rubbing or chaffing if possible, especially fuel pipes metal or rubber.

  4. The steel pipe (not a bit of old brake pipe) should come around the side of the fan shroud and clip into the centre slot of the spark plug lead holder. Yours comes right around the front of the manifold.

  9. Oh really, it comes through hole in tin and against manifold. I think I’ve got some better pics here.

It comes through tin through what seems to be a designated hole.

  11. Sorry I’m now confused. Are you saying I’m using wrong material and fuel clips too? I got it from vwaircooled works as a kit

I'm sure it's coming through the right hole, but from there it should be routed above the manifold rather than below it like yours.

  13. Ah ok, so is the material and clips correct if I just move it?

Your clips are fine, technically the pipe should be steel, I'd just move it.

It's important that when clipped in place it naturally lines up with the hole in the tin. The qjuality of grommets is unreliable as all rubber parts today and you would be wise to keep an eye on it.

what’s wrong with the material and the hose clips ?

  18. If you do have your engine out at any point, worth replacing it with a “proper” steel pipe, routed as per the factory one. EMPI do one that’s ok.

The key is if something is touching like that, either secure it firmly or move it so it can never touch .
The worst thing is flapping around.

Originally the hard line went through a grommet in the tinware then came round to the fuel pump. That way there were fewer joints. What does yours do where it goes through the tin ? Hard line or hose ? Should be hard line through a grommet.

And CuNiFer pipe is brake pipe. Quite robust really.

The stupid trick with rotated pictures is simply to load them in the phone picture editor and crop them slightly and save them. The size can be massive, the website resizes them to fit its settings.
I think this removes the motion from pictures taken on modern phones that take a moving picture and select the best frame for viewing .
