A couple of pics of my karmann beetle which I collected today. Originally from Italy, she came to the UK in the mid 90's and underwent a complete restoration.

Being a LHD it took a little bit of getting used too but really pleased with it.

One thing I did notice is you really have to work the gears to get it to go, and changing up into the next gear unless at a high rpm makes it very hesitant. Pulling off isn't the best unless you give it plenty of throttle.

It's a 1300 with a H30/ 31 pict carb running a 009 distributer and electronic ignition. I haven't checked anything as yet but should it have a svdc on it. I'm thinking this could be my issue. :)

    Wow that's a beauty.
Well done. Mechanical not too much of a problem. Looking solid though.

    Nice car..

Its also a bit cold today , if anybody has messed with stock air cleaner setups it will stay hesitant..

  5. Lovely, I've got a soft spot for topless 1303.

  6. I think someone has done the best mod possible to a 1303 already.
Filled in the slots to the air box
The drain hole is higher than the lowest point.
So it fills up with mud and rots. Then it drips on the fuse box.

Should consider replacing the hood hinges with gas struts.
Or use a broom handle to hold the hood
When the circlip goes on the bottom pin, the spring slams into the apron in front of the screen

Couple of pics of the engine setup, it would seem I have a gold engine too :)

I've Just ordered a refurbished Solex which will run a sdva distributer, so hopefully making the power delivery a bit smoother.

@Barry76 Not had the hood open as yet but the history shows the frame was completely refurbished in the 90's. Any suggestions on who does the struts?

  8. On my 1303 I disconnected the spring so it was a floppy hinge. Kept a nice cut down broom handle.
A mete here did the gas strut hinge - but it is a custom job. Not sure if Super Beetles Only is still going?
that is where we originally saw the mod

Being as it's not going to be used for a bit I decided to drop the engine. Tin wear will be powder coated. Inlet manifold heat riser pipes to be cleaned out and painted. Also probably change some seals whilst it's all accessable.

Seems a bit wet on the underside gearbox certainly dropping oil. Possibly the nosecone?

Looking a bit grubby here too!

Nice looking bug. I’m still using mine as a daily driver.

while the motor is out seriously consider a flange kit on your exhaust.

    Toasty warm and no smell

This is what my current setup is at the moment which is giving me warm air. I don't fully understand what the flange kit is. Is this an aftermarket upgrade?

you have a clamp that joins the heater box pipe to the exhaust.
The heater box i posted has a flange on the end.
You weld another onto the exhaust.
The clamp method always comes loose and allows exhaust fumes into the heater air flow.

The flanges allows a solid join

Places like Aircooled.net sell a kit.

I will see if I can find a link

@Barry76 I see what you mean now.

Had a free couple of hours this afternoon battling to get bolts removed. I will definitely need some new tinware bolts as a lot of these were seized up solid.

Interestingly the engine still had it's VW sticker present. Part number 113 100 033 FX
whether it's had any work since I'm unsure.

Next step is to send the tinware off to be powder coated and get a list together of what bits I need to build it back up.

  16. Interesting - it has the twin pipe heat risers

    Don’t see them too often.
    Can you get gaskets?

    Are you sure it’s a 1300?

I have only seen that set up on the late 1600’s

No idea on the gaskets hopefully I can. Will have to do some searching.

It's a 1300 on the logbook and also just found this on the net so seems to tie up.

The last I heard (a few months ago) was that Aircooled.net had ceased trading while they downsized and relocated; are they back in business now?

  19. I thought all 1303 Super Beetles had 1600 engines in them?
