Looking good Mark. The seals should just be a push fit.

  3. thanks, hopefully it will be some where near water tight (as good as can be) within the next 2 weeks.

  4. perfect, thanks

  5. Got uggy out in the short lived sunshine today
First fill of the fuel tank since owning him (10years) set the fuel pressure to around 2 psi and he fired into life
First time using the key too.
Not running perfect but I have not even looked into tuning this type 4 yet. Static timed about 8 years ago was as far as we got
    [IMG]

Went to war on the drivers door
    [IMG]

Broke too many of these felt gripper clips, I had ordered 3 extras as spares but 4 broke when installing
    [IMG]

Then the rain came, luckily my better half was home and helped me get the pop top up there.

Full on downpour for a good 15 mins, flooded the garden, but did give the “barn find” dust a wash off.
Not ideal having no cab window one side and a half opened one the other (no window winder) and no glass in the tailgate

  6. Productive and far less wet day

Finished up the drivers window scrapers
    [IMG]

Fitted new rubber seals to both cab doors.
Need a touch of glue for the front edge (trim spray or contact adhesive?

Cleaned up the wiper spindles (yes I painted them )

Still waiting on some nuts to turn up from machine 7
    [IMG]

And these that I blasted and repainted a good 9 years ago are going on (bodged on a couple of grommets to keep the water out for now)

A quick Matt black coat for the dash top to tidy things up there

  7. Set the garden spray booth up last week, but sad that i only got the 1 fly this time.
    That’s the bloomed side redone
    [IMG]

    Onto the roof and canvas
    [IMG]

Re-enforced the mountings and had to replace one piece of wood
    [IMG]

Nearly there, i need to have a look at the engine next. And tyres
It’s in need of a proper tune and a service
It starts well but idle is up and down a lot (type 4 with twin solex carbs)

  8. Found an air leak or two whilst trying to dial the carbs in,
Pulled 2 studs out of the head

Now all back together, used timeserts to get me out of trouble

The idle circuit stub pulled out of the carb also, fixed with some retaining compound
    [IMG]

And the carbs are adjusted way out of where they should be, found a guy on YouTube that runs through a nice setup on these on the bench. That has helped loads
It now idles and is some what balanced, not perfect but alright
    [IMG]

Made some brackets for the roof tie downs
    [IMG]

Freshened up some of the inside
    [IMG]

And sorted out a fair few niggles, replaced the horn, required the fuel pump, painted the rear corner, fitted some door cards
Still fighting with the washer system, I’m getting less wet every time I play with it

And got some new tyres forties to the white wheels

  9. Been a few more months without an update, here we go

Some colouring in on the inside
    [IMG]

Floor and r&r bed back in
    [IMG]

As of yet we are undecided on what to do with the interior, still lots of other jobs to be done before hand also.
So just a sink and fridge for now

Next on the to do list is a roof bed for the kids,
19mm ply because I want to go up there too
    [IMG]

It’s very much a non standard hole that was hacked out of the roof, a pre made kit just wouldn’t work. And I like making things
    [IMG]

Probably overkill but it needs to be able to handle me, I’m no featherweight
    [IMG]

Just need some upholstery magic and that should see the roof bed done. I’ll tackle that one in house.

  10. And we also had a road test first drive in the 10 years that I have owned him. Big step

Went alright, and I love the way it drives

I have since adjusted the gear shift rod (auto) which has sorted out a few of my gearbox oddities
The hand brake is poor at best so I need to get the back end up in the air to sort that. Not easily done in my garage so might be a drive way job

    We are making progress

I’ll try to make a 2 mile trip to the petrol station tomorrow

  11. Petrol station trip was a success
The fuel gauge even worked for a couple of mins.

The list of jobs is still long, I’m pleased to be driving him around. It’s been a long 10 years

  12. Loving the dedication! The custom bracket in matching colour looks super! Also, just loving the colour choice in general. Had any more thoughts on the interior...?

  13. Thanks, we picked the colour 10 years ago too. Took 9 years to actually get it on the bus.
It helps that I can be a stubborn Illegitimate child at times and my mates at work constantly telling me that it’ll never see the road

Interior wise I’d like to have units all down one side with a taller cupboard at the rear.
The 2 units I have at now don’t really work, especially with the sink / fridge in the doorway.
So for now we have the sink unit behind the drivers seat and plenty of space

  14. Fair play for your dedication with it! 9 years is a decent amount of time to stick at something :) Hope you've been able to enjoy the journey with it so far!

  15. Thanks, it’s been a rollercoaster of good and bad. A few times I nearly threw the towel in, but I’m very happy with where we are now, we had our first family drive yesterday. Only a few miles but it was great

  16. Haven’t accomplished loads since my last post. There have been a few smaller jobs that needed doing and an on going battle to get him running well enough to get to a vw man to set the carbs up properly

Drivers side glass fell inside the door, quality product and spot welding
    [IMG]

I ended up welding this in place, didn’t want the battle of stripping the door down again
    [IMG]

Not pretty but it’s back together

Used river nuts to get the interior door handles on, I’m missing pretty much all the nuts bolts and clips for everything. I’ll find my own way
    [IMG]

Treated myself to an new toy, even though static timed I was a fair way out. He’s running a good chunk better than before.

Now I’m out and about a bit more, heating would be nice. Digging through my box of bits I have found all the bits I need to connect up the heat exchangers
    [IMG]

I did t realise how bad the heat exchangers were, and no it dosnt really work. Mouse breath has more heat

  17. Had a few more short shake down runs. I ended up fitting a fuel pressure regulator as the pump I was using was putting out way too much pressure
Now set to 2.5 psi and he’s much happier and dosnt stink the place out

Tail gate and engine door seal. Pretty sure that’s all the openings replaced now.
Just waiting on the sliding track cover seals to turn up
    [IMG]

99p eBay bargain grill, when the weather warms up I’ll get that and the bumpers coloured in
    [IMG]

Leisure battery and tinware seal fitted
(The battery went in as a backup jump battery, not the best for the leisure but better than being stuck)

Turns out it was a regulator issue not the battery although it is old and will crank slowly when cold

Had a replacement reg that I got for the beetle but it wouldn’t work. So like the good hoarder that I am I tucked it away for another day.
Even though the gen light went out the most it would charge at was 12.6v. New reg in and we are at a very stable 14.4v

  18. The next shakedown drive ended like this
    [IMG]

Caused a few running issues as it arced and sparked its way around the engine bay,
Glad I went through all the fuel system and breathers etc

Temp solution whilst I try to get a decent replacement
    [IMG]

    And back to road testing.

Running pretty well again, I did get him up to 60, 55 seemed pretty sweet for now,
Just need to get him booked in for a proper set up and see what the 2.0L can do with the 3 speed auto

Still need to polish the paint work

Try to make the heating system work better

Work out why the wipers stopped doing their thing

Interior, we are going in a different direction now, the westy stuff we have just won’t work
And I’m not overly happy with the bed. Rusty Lee is calling lol

  19. Been plodding along with the interior / camper conversion side of things

I had some gas struts tucked away in the shed (can’t remember what from) these worked perfectly for holding the top bunk up and out of the way for when it’s not needed

The ply wood is 19mm thick and quite weighty but a single strut can support the weight. No problem for the 2 that I fitted

Other than the header boxes being shot to bits, I was also missing these parts u see the dash. Has defiantly helped her the heat up to where I want it, just need to remember which control does what.

Interior cupboards, I always planned on making my own. Until I saw this on eBay

It’s MDF so I’ll head to seal and paint it to keep the moisture out but it will defiantly do the job
    [IMG]

I shortened the depth of the very rear cupboard to clear the engine hatch and also to neatly fit in with the rear seatbelt mount
    [IMG]

And modified the fridge hole to accept a wider unit from the Westfalia interior that I got a while back
    [IMG]

  20. I have had a stereo in uggy for a while but no speakers,
Mad a cardboard template, then some hardboard kick panels, then some speaker holes

Hooked up the stereo and we are in business. I’ll add more in the rear once I get a new bed, and some more speakers

I also need cup holders, just what the un-treated MDF likes
    [IMG]

Here’s a couple of pics from the London dub club meet (the beetle was the vehicle of choice this time)
