Re-skin a '79 rear tailgate / hatch

Discussion in 'How To' started by Nicolasticity, Jan 14, 2022.

  1. About to re skin a Viking panel van tailgate. Bottom 2ins (51mm) rotted out so lots of weld but there are two sections that double skin - tailgate lock and the catch at the base.

Catch at base has a separate section which I think has a right angle to the section from the tailgate lock.

Question is which panels attach to the skin or the frame or just each other. Will post pic when I remember to take me phone

I think you may be blazing a new trail, in the past the answer would have been to replace the tailgate.
You can still get a new one, £400 from Heritage, not cheap but...

It should be obvious when you start to remove the rusty bits but I would guess panel adhesive between skin and layer below.

I have a few pretty good tailgates , maybe better than repairing through the skin

  4. Almost there - taken far to long and yes maybe I should buy a different one but….
