Need some advice, I have had some play for a while on the rear bearings and have an mot pending. I'm thinking these at the point where they need changing.

Got it to tighten up slightly but I still have all the play :(

My rear bearings got a mention on my last mot.
Someone suggested that a good run to get them warm, just before the test would help..... although there does appear to be a fair bit of play there.

That's a lot of axial play. You'll have to take it apart to find where the wear occurred.

Whats the movement like with the wheel on, when you push the top of the wheel in and and pull outwards from the bottom of the wheel . I think that is the movement they will be more concerned about .

  9. This is what should be in there if/when you strip the hub. The axial play is controlled by the ball race on the inside which is held by a circlip. So there is an outside chance that the bearings are good and the circlip has come out of the groove.[IMG]

  10. I thought the same. A lot of play for just worn balls/rollers.

With the wheel on its very noticeable. More play at 12/6 o'clock. I'll whip the driveshaft off tomorrow and check the circlip is in place.

I third or fourth that view. That is not normal bearing wear .. Usual manifestation is with the wheel on , it rocks from side to side. Ahh - see you just said it rocks too...

The circlip is the grey circlip behind the seal on the left .

You will need to get the big nut off - wheel on and wedged, breaker bar on nut ..

Then the stub axle can be unbolted from the drive shaft and slid out , then maybe all it needs is a new seal and a circlip .

However for the whole deal which is the rocking up and down, the outer bearing race is pressed/hammered in and out ...

Only on the second try.. thats why I have done three..[IMG]

Both the GSF and the Heritage bearing kits seem to last tens of thousands of miles ..if they are correctly installed.... I have one of each now.. or 40 miles if the roller race goes in crooked...

My local GSF has a couple of premium bearings in stock. I'll go and grab them this morning.
