Just woke up to read the news. Died suddenly at 67. Another face I’ve grown up with. Really enjoyed his R2 show. Like a few who have left R2 recently he wasn’t particularly happy with recent changes. 67 is no age though. RIP Lily/Paul
Oh wow, that is really too young. An old friend of mine (also now sadly no longer with us) and he were friends from growing up together in Liverpool. Bob always spoke really fondly of him and their friendship. RIP Paul O'Grady
RIP . One of the best comedy nights I’ve had was Lily Savage doing a set in a gay club in Blackpool in the 80’s. V funny and he wasn’t a big fan of Mrs T and her govt who provided good material. Saw him again as Lily Savage in the City Hall in Sheffield when he was more mainstream and was still v funny. Liked his radio programmes , he seemed a genuinely nice guy and big animal lover. He was neighbours with Julian Clary and laughed about how they were not exactly the stereotype of country house/ small holding locals
‘Growing up, we were poor, but we were shoplifters’ Remains to me one of the funniest one liners in comedy. I’m genuinely gutted, he was great on radio 2, his simple humanity and care always to the fore. The dogs home programs were the best however, such a myriad of emotions for him each time, it was funny watching him melt 4 or 5 times an episode. What a 1st class human being, RIP.
Sad news genuinely one of the good guys, Made great radio and tv programmes, always raised a laugh, remained chirpy dispite many health issues, seemed to enjoy his life to the full...
Oh No -that is sudden - I thought his Lily Savage was brilliant - always savage humour - not such a fan of his real self until he started doing his Battersea dogs home stuff - and Mrs Cunny wrote ( emailed) into his R2 Sunday show recommending a friend of hers for the dog lover's tea towel of the day - which she got. RIP
A great story from him as Lily “It was 34 years ago when the cops raided the [Royal]Vauxhall[Tavern],” he commented on an Instagram post from the pub. “I was doing the late show and within seconds the place was heaving with coppers, all wearing rubber gloves. I remember saying something like, ‘Well well, it looks like we’ve got help with the washing up.’”
