I was going to attempt to set up my carburettor today however The engine turned so slow it wouldn't fire up The battery is only 2 months old and fully charged but just to make sure I connected up jump leads to my work van but it made no difference whatever. Both earth straps are brand new I even put a jump lead directly to the engine block but still no difference. Is this just simply a knackered starter motor? Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
What state are the cables from battery to starter in? Worth giving them a clean up as a starting point.
^^^Yes. I found that the stud where the battery lead and alternator lead join on the starter solenoid was really filthy on mine.
So it was fine before you replaced the above ?? Have you tried the +ve jump lead direcly onto the starter ??
Bus was a shell with engine behind the driver's seat when I bought her so virtually all wiring is new engine hadn't been started for 12 years until last week. I'll try lead on starter in the morning Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Did you have the ignition leads connnected in the right order ? If you get it wrong you can end up with reluctance to turn over. Did you begin by putting oil down the spark plug holes and turning it over by hand first? Then turn it over by starter without plugs until there is oil pressure and the light goes off on the dash. Then put the plugs in,set static timing, set the tappet clearances, check the order of the leads. Then try to start. If the plug leads are in the wrong order the backfires when it runs can be spectacular. I lost a chunk of a rusty EMPI silencer forever when it blew out in a backfire caused by swapping plug leads 1 and 2 because it looked neatest. ( they cross over when you get it right ).. A 12 year idle period for an engine is enough for oil to seep away and rust film or worse to form in the cylinders. Basically treat it as a barn find.
Yes mate oil down cylinders All wiring correct I had it running over a few days but it just wouldn't idle as soon as I took foot off it would die b4 I could run to the back. So yesterday my mate popped around to help but the starter wouldn't turn the engine fast enough?? Chucked jump leads on made no difference whatever. So I'm thinking the starter is knackered I've been looking for a new one Jk £160 eek. Any recommendations? I found this on Ebay https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/301634747981 Thoughts? Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Even GSF exchange starters are cheap and work OK. OK if it dies ..I found thats usually timing related, setting timing with idle too high over 1K rpm when you have also got centrifugal advance. Then the revs drop for some reason , the timing retards and the engine dies.
Starters definitely knackered Kicked it over with jump leads off the bus, the shaft throws but 1st time I done it span very slow 2nd time thrw but didn't spin at all Took to bits and the motor is rubbing. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
^this. GSF will sell you a recon starter built from old Bosch parts. Mine has lasted. I’d avoid the Chinese ones.
Make sure you fit a new bush in the bell housing before you put a new starter in, or you will be back to square one in no time.
