  1. So following on from my LVH engine sale thread I now have extracted the 6 rib gearbox that it was attached to.

It has to be said that of the two items this is by far the best, because it actually does what it's supposed to.

I have no history of it. I bought it yonks ago off a member on here, cleaned it up, painted it the correct colour, not gold, black and put it in.

It has performed faultlessly in the 500 miles and would in fact be staying in the bus aside from the fact that I bought a complete car to do my conversion and it seemed rude not to use the box and go 5 speed. It also meant and standard clutch and flywheel.

So here it is for sale. It changes gears fine, does not jump out of any gears and as far as I'm aware it doesn't make any untoward clunks, grinds or whines. But it's used, it's 40+ years old so bear that in mind. I'm 50+ years old and I clunk, groan and whine all the time so this may start.

It comes with the starter motor, the odd looking wingnut with a square back on it that fits in the fork and the proper starter motor bolt. I did fit a new bronze bush before I fitted in the bus. It's drained of oil but the remains of a new can come with it.

Opinions vary on its value from £650 for an unknown one to £1000 for a known good used item. This is used and I think it's fine, but that's a subjective view from someone who knows little about gearboxes.

I think I'd like £800 for the lot, box, starter etc. Im open to offers and I can pop it on a pallet if you so wish, the cost of shipping is down to the buyer. I can probably get it to Techenders for nearly free (it will cost 4xbottles of Thatcher's gold) or you can of course collect it from near Sherborne Dorset. I do get around the South west so I may be able to meet up somewhere too.

Contact me on here if you have any questions, apart from "why did a mini metro only have a 4 speed gearbox, ive got nothing on that it's puzzled me for years".

    Cheers

  3. I a bit dumb to this other than k want better motorway cruising for my 1600tp on motorways etc with 185/65 tyres, will this just bolt up and go or do I need to swap various other bits?

  4. Generally a 6 rib is a bit much for a 1600, it makes them labour and then run hot.

I ran a 6 rib on a 1600 for donkeys years with no issues.
You’d need to swap the bell housing though.

  6. And I had to adjust the shift rod to get my 6 rib to fit.

  7. Didn't you have to change the input shaft too, I seem to remember you changing it back?

  8. If you run a 1600 a six rib won’t make a Fly sh poo of difference to your top speed

Maybe if you are in Holland or Nevada and have a hundred miles to go ;)

Yep. If a bus was already running a 3 rib it’d be an easy swap.

Type 4 input shaft is longer. Simple change requiring an new bell housing gasket and a 19mm circlip.
Final drive is about 6 percent different iirc. Means lower revs for same speed but the downside is dropping out of the torque band so power loss up hills may be more noticeable. Paul's comment above about them potentially running hotter is a result of that. These transaxles like revs. VW designed them to be rev happy and what kills them is people driving buses like a modern car, shifting up too early.
Unless the tyres are a bit smaller than stock, which in @Jackvw 's post appears to be the case, although we have to assume he's on 15 rims.
What he lost in cruising speed comfort (increased noise by revving higher) by running smaller diameter tyres, he'll make up with by swapping to the 6 rib. So back to stock performance and potentially a good upgrade for Jack if he wants to keep his current tyre profile:thumbsup:

  11. I ran a 1776cc with 185/65/R15 tyres with a 3 rib gear box for ages.
    When i fitted a 2110cc I needed 6 rib equivalent gear ratios.

Unless your 1600 needs a new gearbox, i'd save your money until something breaks or spend it on something that will give you an improvment

Longer gears - less power to the wheels, worse acceleration, less cooling / per mph.

Do you know for a fact that it was a 1600 Doug? It didn't behave like one.

Nope, other than the advert I bought it from. Maybe the seller didn’t know either!

It wouldn't be the first time a detail like that gets lost by someone more interested in the curtains. Loads of people come on here without the foggiest idea what their engine is.

Get a more powerful engine or fit smaller wheels;)
It's easy for folk to forget that wheel diameter is part of the gearing calcs..:D

I guess it would cure those lowered buses with smart car tyres crawling along at 45mph that I zip past on the motorway... but... they are probably safer at that speed with those tyres.

  20. Increase revs by driving faster. I’ve got into the habit of forgetting to change up from third. With dells on it’s frightening just how fast they will go in third!
