Looking for recommendations for a standard distributor (with vacuum advance). Currently got a Flamethrower but got a random misfire so want to revert back to standard to either confirm/rule out the Flamethrower.

Know I can buy direct from the usual suspects for £75+. Just wondering if there are lower costs opinions that I can explore.

  2. I would source a used Genuine dissy than risk problems with an aftermarket one. Deffo give Accuspark a wide berth.

I’ve got a good ‘old’ flame thrower you could try. I’m not a million miles from you. AL4 if you want to drive down and give it a try.

  4. So what engine are you trying to match the dizzy to ??
    If it's a 1600 I may be able to help ...

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I've returned my flamethrower so just need to buy a replacement.

Any other recommendations on what to buy? Current dizzy is vacuum advance type.

Just for future reference, what were the circumstances of the return ,was there any issues along the way in doing so.?

I see lots of talk about a '123' - but what is a 123 exactly?

Google 123 dizzy or 123 ignition.

If a standard dizzy is like a 1970’s Ford the 123 is like a 2023 Mercedes

and if only life was easy...

Volkswagen Archives - 123ignition has narrowed the search down a smidge. Still not sure which one to go with TBH

    What u got Chris?

  15. I'm currently running an 034 which is correct for the 1600 , matched with an 80s optical Lumenition ignition ( bought from someone on here ) which is pretty blummin good to be honest - miles better than Pertronix - just runs smoother and so far (5 years) 100% reliable.
I do have a totally untried 034 in the spares stash I was going to refurb as a spare but have an accuspark so probably don't need the spare.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. I'm after a German dizzy with vacumn advance. Is that the same or different to the one you have in the spares?

it gave up the ghost after 11 months and didn't produce a spark...zip...zilch...nada

Bought from Amazon so got a full refund

Will buy a 123 when I work exactly which one it is for my engine

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

All VW aircooled (and some Volvos) use the same one... For vacuum and mech advance which is what you want...
123VW-4-R-V is the most straightforward. If you like fiddling with ignition curves other models are available for more dosh.
I haven't looked lately but this seems like a fair price.

Thanks Zed. Thought it was that one, but it's definitely not obvious to the untrained eye.

Southern Carbs sell them for £269.95 (linky). Looks to be the correct one, but they refer to it as VW-R-V...is that the same thing?? Only Southern Carbs know for sure.

And then there is the problem of deciphering the installation guide to work out which of the sixteen settings to use.
