The luggage strap idea was rejected by the Operative Committee.
But the biggest surprise was that the JK springs were the right length according to JK's evanescent online chat facility ..no direct phone calls except to complain the website was missing the Live Chat button.. strangely it materialised 5 mins later..

Around that point I think if we had had a pilot friend at RAF Odiham, Sarah would have asked them to empty a bag of horse manure out of a Chinook over JK HQ...

but the springs coil bound about 2cm before the struts were short enough. So we had to do the whole thing twice, about twice as fast the second time. But we put some spacers on the old springs to make them push 4% harder as thats what we had in the pile of bits..

So Sarah ended up with the old springs back in? that's rather annoying for her!

Indeed. I felt more for Mike and Paul who had wrestled the damn things into the struts for me (I did roof support and screw / bolt tightening)
The springs were either too long or the metal too thick…. Either way, they couldn’t compress enough to allow the roof to lower fully. Crazy.
A plan was hatched to use some 2cm spacers inside the far end of the strut, which effectively slightly lengthened the original springs, giving a bit more oomph to the roof.
Not exactly how it was supposed to work out, but that small amount has actually done the trick…. the side canvas on my pop top is now flat again rather than a bit baggy, and the springs do ‘pop’ the roof up.
Happy days. Eventually.
(after a brief sense of humour failure!)

Poo...sorry should have told you I wasn't going mate, a bit gutted really as I decided not to go as a chap was supposed to come to buy the camper but couldn't make it ...

Glad someone is going to benefit from a new hob

13. Sorry for the early morning wake up, good to see everyone. And meet new faces.

I'm off to do some climbing with work. I'll take pictures for proof (if we aren't scuppered by the W)

No worries Mark. Think I bought those j channels off davidoft about 8 years ago but ended up going a different route with the roof.
