  1. Ooh, I did something today.

It was only Wednesday that I finally got it running properly (after 23 years, athankyou) and on Friday, I thought I'd give it a run. two minutes in, the engine seized. I was less than chuffed about that.

Stripped the top end down and found I've got a bit of an odd engine- the cylinder heads are slimmer than normal with only 6 fins rather than 8, and the barrels have two more to compensate. It came as standard with type 3 "cool tins" and was meant for running either petrol or ethanol, depending on the pistons used (i have dished ones, for petrol).

Standard cylinders vs. funky Brazilian cylinders with 2 extra fins:

It'd eaten a nut, which is unfortunate. That's not what made the engine seize though- a valve seat came unstuck and the rocker arm let the pushrod come out and on it's way back, it jammed- stopping the engine.
Actually ran pretty good with the eaten nut.

  6. One was next day as they had it in stock. The other was about 3 weeks tops. Best of all they are around 50 quid a pair with tlb discount. I wonder if they are from the paraguay haul? Order through VW Classic Parts on their website not through them as the prices are different. For some reason.

  8. A small step yesterday but not bothered to do it in 5 years of ownership, installed new rubber cab mats because there was only one on one side and that was well old. Now, the seats look tired so next month it'll be seat covers.

  9. Stabbed myself in the thumb with a Screwfix awl. It really hurts.

Cleaned out the primary idle jet as it seemed blocked or partially blocked. I couldnt see through it. After cleaning it out with carb cleaner which blew back I couldnt see much through any of the jets as my eye stung .
Then changed it anyway for a 47 from a 45 as I have decided to start gently fiddling with the jets now I have fized the ignition coil.

Discovered today my RPM sender computer has died after bring exposed to ignition flashovers. eBay wants £16 for a NOS chip to repair it so I will be using a different computer board with the same software as it is cheaper ..

If there wasn't a specific warning advising you that sticking it into yourself was a bad idea then you have a claim against screwfix.
Did you get the "sticking it in" bit on film as you'd need to prove it wasn't another manufacturers awl that caused the injury.

  13. Like my Screwfix dot punches, you mean, which I think were made out of Dairylea...

They do right lovely 20mm conduit, tho'

  20. got fed up of making chicken coups for the better half so went for a drive in it..... knew something wasn't quite right:thinking:.
had a look in the back, erm how the hell is that loose.. the crank bolt was loose. sorted that but instead of returning to chicken duty i decided to scrape old split underseal out of the front arch, surprised at the lack of rust but the amount of original paint. never had to underseal before so any thoughts on the best way of protecting it for the next 40 years then shout out........
