  1. Did you wrestle it into place?

Yep. Took it back out after last weeks fiasco and refitted making sure it went the right side of the 1/4 light bar. Still jammed tight against the glass.
Took it back out and bent the top / horizontal section towards the inside of the bus, refitted, and it fits fine.
Must have been stood on at some point, but all good now, if a little bit grindy where the coil now runs on the metal tube.

  6. Arse. Ah well, it's going back on. Maybe the valve seats will drop out, but probably they won't.

  7. Drill down as far as you dare with a small drill bit to stop the crack spreading as easy?

I had to do it with an exhaust flange once and it didn’t get any worse

  8. Just had a closer look and it’s on both sides

It will spit the plug out before it drops a seat

  10. I’d agree. It’s what twin port heads do, although these are “new” Autolineas with about 5,000 miles on them. Not impressed.

  11. I’ve ported a few autolinia heads and the casting has always been rough n ready with lots of cleaning up needed
They always gave me the impression of poor quality

The empi heads that were coming out around the same time were a lot better quality in my view

I handled a set of heads a few weeks ago from aa pistons and they looked like a very well made head
New combustion chamber shape as well.

  12. I found the Autolinea castings were not that bad. But…I think it’s inherent in the head design, and appears to be worse on twin-ports. There’s just not enough material where they need it. They’ll all crack eventually.

  13. I agree it’s a design problem primarily
But the better quality of casting you start with the longer it shouldn’t be a problem

But you can’t asses the quality of the materials or the standard of casting by looking at it?

But experience and lots of different heads and a lot of time lapsed gives you a feel for things.

I’ve a set of original vw Brazilian heads here the ones that cb performance modelled there pancho heads on
I’m not going to use them on my engine build as the valves are too small
I really should put them up for sale

  14. Are they the injection heads? Don’t forget bus engines like to be strangled.

  15. Yes they are the sought after injection heads
But the valves are smaller than stock

My bus absolutely shot of the lights with those heads but on steep hills it felt too strangled

The first time I met @Zed was in Derbyshire for a quiet weekend with a few others

In leaving the campsite I gave it some beans
Steve was reasonably impressed and asked if it was definitely a 1600

I think a lot of heads/manifolds/carbs etc are too big for a bus
    But they sell well

With the capacity increase I do genuinely feel these valves are too small

For some reason they have become that thing on the shelf
That I don’t need right now but there’s not that many about
So I best keep hold of it incase I need it in the future

The EMPI heads are cleaner castings than Autolinea and look better down the ports.
My Autolinea heads cracked like that and it wasnt the spark plug falling out, it was the way the plug felt like it was cross threaded at the bottom of the thread.. it started easily but got stiffer as it ran into the crack.

  17. Fitted a new spring to the door lock mech in under eight days and sealed new wing mirror glass in with silicone and predictably messy results...

  18. My Matrix Sentinels are mainly for a Solar and Battery to Battery charger setup.

Each connects to the chassis and to a Busbar (for circuit negative returns).

The 3rd tail is for a Battery to Battery common negative - as per instructions of a Sterling BBS1230, which a BM12123 joins.

Before I go blowing anything up out of ignorance:
•With the negative terminals of Starter and Leisure batteries conjoined, is there anything I should be aware/weary of?

I assume removing negative before positive of either battery breaks associated circuits, but what happens to to the removed Negative since it is still joined to the other battery. Safe to let touch metal?

I’d rather not short anything out but don’t even truly know all the circumstances under which that can happen.
    Cheers folks.

I'm thinking that if both batteries are connected to the chassis, it's the same as connecting them together anyway. Also if the starter battery is connected to the chassis then if you remove the negative clamp from the leisure battery and it then touches metal it is of no consequence.

All the time negatives are joined together you need to treat both positives as hot until all negative connections to chassis are isolated. Take care leaving wires dragging around.
