solex 32-34 pdsit-2 problem

  1. Hi westy

Yes I started here, but I sent a specific message to a Mike fox( probably not the right Mike) however someone quoted a specific kit and then a debate ensued about the quality. I am trying to work out the simple less technically challenging approach to the problem.

  2. Hi Andy

Ok but I do have hopefully a cause for my fuel smell with the leaking carbs, and I will try to fix these 1st.
    thanks

  3. Just a comment on these two pipes Darron. Underneath the airbox there are two small pipes, one brass, one black plastic. The brass one connects via a narrow hose to the box on the tin behind into which the black corrugated air hose fits. The other one goes into the idle balancing system in the middle under the air filter box. They are there to aid running in cold weather (I think).

As you will come to realise, these carbs are a nightmare of add ons. If you search you'll find various guides to setting them up and what all the bits mean. I've never managed to fully understand it all.

  4. Strangely the smell is more obvious when the wind blows from a certain way? I only topped up about 7 ltrs into an almost empty tank. Could the vapour be stronger as there is so little fuel in the tank.

  5. I'm not sure if its year specific but there should be a round panel inside the engine bay which gives access to the fuel tank filler pipe. It's hard to get to though - real head in the engine bay stuff. Also, have you checked all the breather pipe connections? These are notorious for causing fuel smells.

  6. I have the diagram that was posted on here a while ago showing the connections. Are these all in the engine bay or do some have to be checked under the van. I checked the one in the spare wheel well and it is fine.

  7. There are three more inside the tank compartment. Engine out for a t1, doable with engine in in t4 but not much fun. The filler pipe is accessible through the tin lid, but again you need the fire wall panel off as well.

  8. I had petrol leaking on my T1 from the solex 34 pict3 carb which turned out to be the carb fuel input needle valve. However I took the opportunity to replace all fuel pipes and breather pipes as most were old and worn and the rubber tank filler hose and neck were all perished and cracked leaking petrol fumes.

All replaced, now all good. Don't drive your van until you have fixed the fuel system problems.

  9. Hi Andy , that seems to make sense as there is a central metal silver pipe under the air filter housing, not sure while blocked off, but will try and workout,
    Thanks again

  10. Will do, on a mission

  11. Hi forum
Ok I have taken the right hand side carburettor out, not to bad, and followed an online method. What I noticed was that when turning the ignition on to check the idle solenoid valve that there was some leakage of fuel from the left fuel pipe to the left carburettor. I will change this fuel pipe ( any recommendations).

I have looked at the carburettor, Solex 32-34 PDSIT-3 , but it is not a solex 34 PDSIT -3. I can't find a service procedure online for this (? any ideas)

The needle float valve , is it supposed to be sprung, because it only opens if you blow down the fuel pipe.

As you can see from the above, I don't know what I am doing however it has been an interesting day and time has flown.

  13. Hi 77 Westy

Yes I will probably look at this kit with the service kit for the carburettor. I am a little disappointed with the previous work, the air filter is from south Africa from where the van originates. It was not changed at the time of the engine refurbishment , which I can not understand.

    Thank you for the link.

  14. As above yes the two carbs are different. The pair of them are designated 34 pdsit 2/3, where 2 is left and 3 is right. The main body of each matches but the left hand one also has the idling device built in. Using the two screws on the top of the left carb you can adjust the idle speed (big screw) or mixture (small). Leave the mixture alone until you know what you’re doing.

The float valves have a tiny spring inside which opens the valve so fuel can flow, but when the fuel bowl is full the float comes up and shuts the valve.

  15. Ok I accept that the 2 are different but when I look at the diagrams of the carburettors for 34pdsit2/3 , they do not look like my carbs, the screws do not look in the same place , the float looks different. I do not seem to be able to find a diagram that matches, which then makes me ? what service kit to get.

There is a chap saran 1955 who gives one video that seems to match my 2 carbs but he goes on to demonstrate the choke and accelerator lever, which is further on from where I am. steep learning curve, pulling a few Gs at the moment.

    Cheers Darron oao

  16. Hi Deefer,

Wow some light reading for me tomorrow I think, weather is cold and wet and excuse to stay in.

    Thanks Darron
