Just binged the last 19 pages and am impressed with your skills and attention to detail given to Major, an inspiration for me. Now about that motor. Originality is overrated, it is your bus and a reflection of your self. You want to do long distances in it so go for a scooby and while you are at it chuck a turbo on! I have a Toyota GT86 that uses a Subaru FA20 boxer, would love to put one in a bus, great engine.
As it stands, Im quite tempted to rebuild the type 4 in Major. The case is the original one so it would be good to keep it, however, I would pop a 78mm crank in it and aim for a 2258 (or whatever the capacity will become) which should make for one nice motor. Gusbus goes really well with his 1915cc type 4, that puts out 96bhp at the flywheel
Still working on the interior, as per the last update, which was the twisted cross brace bars on the long panel. The bars looked badly twisted but in places, the weld was in tact. The rust was treated and any gaps filled in with panel adhesive, lots of it! The inside of the panel to the front, left side of the wheelarch was also sorted It all turned out good, I'm pleased! Bulkhead painted & the shelf support sorted too
The long panel looked dull and needed a good refresh, rattle can Rustoleum in the RAL colours worked well! first coat looks great! some trim replaced with new, grab handle (which needed trimming) and coat hook and one of the side trim pieces varnished and replaced and a hole to fill
Had a very productive couple of weeks with successful results. Got the panel surrounding the right hand rear window painted up nice and fresh For the second time, the louvre window is back in place Made a start refitting the NLAVW Westfalia panels, they are excellent quality, fit is good & they look nice! Tailgate Jailbars fitted and finally, made a start on insulating the side panels Tomorrow will see the rear half of the roof refitted and then I can concentrate on finishing painting the rear load bay floor and the main cargo floor. Its coming along nicely!
Its not gone yet, that's next up on the list, we have been fitting the roof today else I'd have sorted and removed it. Its horrible stuff, I'm not a fan of it to be honest. Im tempted to see what modern alternatives are available and add some more or add a second layer of the aluminium backed bubble type
Following on from yesterdays post on the inside, me and Ste got the roof on, quite easily which was far from what I imagined and more so, we moved him into his new garage (which from last July was filled with his roof). Sorted
Cracking on mate! I see you're advertising your favourite NW Leicestershire based VW garage on the rear glass
yes indeed, that will be replaced with a period Santa Cruz sticker in time, to maintain Majors US home and roots!
I think I read on here somewhere just to only used closed cell insulation rather than anything that can absorb and hold water. I know nothing though as I have no insulation
That rings a bell, I’ll have a search round and see what comes up. Definitely don’t want anything which holds moisture, perhaps another layer of the aluminium insulation will be ample.
Little bits done this past couple of weeks. Purple mentioned a removable cover for the PO hack fuel gauge sender access hole..sorted Engine inspection hatch painted up in satin black and the outside edge of the back bed area painted and the spare wheel well painted too (I have only done the outside as I'm putting Dynamat down on the rest of it) Im now sorting out the cargo floor, roughing the old paint up, vactan treating the rust spots and sorting the sink drain hole perimeter as its got a lot of rust surrounding it. it looks worse than it is, I found a copper bristled wire brush made good inroads into removing the corrosion, which turned out to be surface only and not rotten steel. I haven't got any photos yet!
looking good, personally (your bus your choice) i think white bumpers would look better to go with the white roof
