Yep - and when you've done all that, you can proper hear the wind noise around the mirrors, aerial and on mine, the door seals It's worth doing - though you can be more sparing as coating every single panel completely has a diminishing return.
it makes me wince a bit when I see these buses that have been lined head to toe in Dynamat.....nice if you can afford it, but not necessary, as you say...better spending the dollar on decent tyres...or a louder sound system
Yes, intake noise is an issue. I'm still looking at multi point FI, but would like something with an intake plenum to reduce noise, but they all seem to use the separate (noisy) filters.
Thanks . So I've only got one to worrry about as I have the captain's chair spinner. Are the things - techy term there- that the seats sit-on above the wheels a particular problem with road related noise?
the wheel arches? absolutely....only realistic way to tackle it is from inside the van....on modern cars some of the ICE enthusiasts put sound deadening between the wheel arch liner and the arch itself.... there's an old thread on the internet about a guy who went to town on his bus and coated everything (and I mean everything) with "Kool Patch" or some such, sold in the US...a thick, sound deadening underseal.....looked pretty fugly, but I imagine it worked pretty well
Oh so they count as wheel arches. I have the original rubber-type covering which has some minimal foam in its construction - looks a bit pants so will look at options for this area. Might try some Silent Coat if I like what I have been sent in the starter pack. Cheers.
I'd Love to go out in a bus where the owner has gone to town on sound deadening, as I really can't see it making a noticeable difference! (Could be wrong; I just can't see it personally)
Think either Dynamat or Just Kampers have a video posted on their websites with one of Just Kampers own buses and a customer bus done with Dynamat, but not a before and after type setup, just a drive in one with and one without and a decibel meter along for the ride. Also if you watch videos it's hard to tell really how loud they are in real life as some bus noises are a lot more irritating than others.
When i went to JK central they had a pair of new doors on show, one with and one without deadening.... makes them sound less pingy when gravel hits them! I've done a few bits in my van but noticed more of an effect carrying my birch interior up to london before selling it on. When i drove back empty it were a bit noiser!
I drive some peoples buses that are so quiet you can barely hear the engine, others like mine you need ear defenders.
I have just done mine with Dynamat and it is whisper quiet. The doors make a satisfying thud when you close them and if you tap the panels on the outside they make a much duller sound. To do a camper you will need to buy the 9 sheet pack from JK which with the roller adds up to bout 270 quid. Don't bother with the Dynamat Aluminium tape for the seams as some non branded tape can be had much cheaper at Halfords and works just as well. In my opinion this is well worth doing.
