Is Soundproofing Worth It?

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by ampthillmob, Apr 27, 2015.

  1. Hi - our bus had been completely stripped out for some welding to be done. Whilst it is empty thinking about taking the opportunity to put some sound proofing material in....

Anyone else done this - is it worth doing? And if so what did you use?

    Thanks in advance

There are some proper detailed threads on this somewhere on here.
    Search "Dynamat" might find them.

  3. Oh it's defo worth doing. Silent coat on 30% of each panel to reduce noise resonance and I intend to use sticky aluminium roof flashing on the rest. The non smelly stuff. It's basically a much cheaper way of dynamatting, a mix of the two plus then flexible carpet over the top will do the trick nicely. Search diy sound deadening or similar onto YouTube and Google and see what comes up some links show comparisons too, silent coat do. I intend to do the same on mine when the wallet allows!

    Dynamat is worth it.

  5. I just spent hours doing mine. I would say its completely worth it. The noise level has dropped considerably even when driving at 50-60

Maybe a little overkill but Id rather that than the deafening noise. 20150213_170452.jpg 20150227_135258.jpg 20150228_210306.jpg

  6. Incidentally what did people do for the front panel?

  7. yes. silent coat on 20 - 30% of panels followed by closed cell foam on entire panels... (yes, i know open cell is better acoustically but it holds moisture!)

  8. I used to use Dynamat or Brown Bread sound proofing sheets.
The trick is not to put sheets on but apply in strips, with a heat gun and a roller.

Path Group / Rockford Fosgate do (possibly still do it) a spray on dynamat affair - it'll be the blue one if it's still available.

  10. ive used dynamate all over and its worth it. must use some in the van too lol
u can use flat roof weather proofing rolls for additional bits as its cheaper (bnq etc)

  12. Silent coat is pretty cheap on ebay. Might as well add something while the van is empty. Anything is better than nothing.

  14. I think you'll find I wrote extensively on sound proofing long before he joined the forum!

And not via Google but through oainful, bitter experience ... And a few noise boys with campers :p

  15. I used to build pro recording studios and rehearsal rooms for a living, so the theory and principles are much the same....it's just a different space, with different parameters....

  16. Price up roof flashing to it's sticky backed lead half the price of dynamat

  17. And twice the weight... But then my cooker was built by a steelworker used to making shuttering :/

  18. I did my split with this and it worked great to stop the tinny sound on panels. I added sticky backed floor underlay to stop the noise and the foil bubble wrap type insulation on the side panels. Got everything from screwfix and cost about £100 to do the whole van. I'm a ways off sound proofing on Vynii!

  19. I did a 'scientific' test using an iPhone sound meter for before / after. I did the rear load area / bulkhead with dynamat and also put some on the inside of the engine lid and the fire wall. When starting up and at idle, it did sound a bit muffled and the meter reading was a little lower. Tests at higher revs / when moving showed no difference on the meter.

Longer gearing definitely helps, getting the revs down at cruising speed makes a bigger difference than Dynamat!

  20. having twin carbs or a pancake filter doesn't help either...
