I can get my van up to 60 but tbh I am usually nodding off by the time it gets there, I tried the acceleration test once on a nice straight bit of road local to me and it took about 45 seconds just to get somewhere near, then I ran out of road, I also passed a patrol car that was secreted away behind an hedge while the inhabitants ate their sandwiches and watched the steam trains on the Severn valley railway.

I never bothered with a return run tbh, couldn't see the point it was slightly uphill and they the police were still parked up eating their lunch and I was a bit concerned they would pull me just to find faults or to see if I was sane.

The thing is, that bit of road is clear and national speed limit, I was there in my van giving it large going hell for leather ( In my mind ) whereas in actual reality dustbin lorry's could overtake me or really quick fizzers, but when you speed test a rusty old nail like mine you feel as if you enter warp speed at about 5o mph, mainly because all the cuttlery and plates are rattling in the drawers and the jalousie window is losing the glass as the seals are on their last legs.

On the return I glanced over at the policemen sat in their patrol car and they were peeing theirselves laughing at me - the older one gave me the thumbs up as if to ask - did it do it? and carried on smiling in a sort of - there's no hope for some of them - sort of way. I just smiled nervously back and tried to look nonchalant. They had it sussed, but couldn't be bothered to pull a ageing 70's throwback who was simply reliving a moment of his youth before the nursing home beckoned

To make matters worse, I had promised my Mrs I wouldn't go doing anything daft to our newly back on the road van like speed testing or driving it fast until I knew how she handled, when I got home she got the sniff of a hot engine ( she knows these things my Mrs) looked at my face and wandered off smiling and shaking her head like only your Mrs can do - I felt a tad silly tbh.

I think I will leave this speed testing to the younger set with proper engines and console myself with the thought she can do 60 when she is on a run - but I sometimes wonder if I will get to 60 before her!

  7. Never mind, your van might not accelerate like a modern coupe but it will definite out-appreciate it!

  11. 1st(and only)time I booted mine , on M25 ,sunny windless day nice flat road engine warm so floored it , it took a while but heck it shifted ,so much so I was bricking it re using the brakes to slow her down and gripped the steering wheel (was just post purchase)and experienced the joys of a bus with a gubbed steering box, crappo dampers ,worn steering pin etc etc , undoubtably ,several drivers may have commented to their mates later that an old guy driving an old bus started off passing them very quickly and further up motorway was parked up on hardshoulder chucking his guts up over the verge<true, was well scary.
