10 years ago - a post about mental illness

  1. Hi Folks,

This may be a bit heavy for TLB - but I have a lot of friends here and hope that amongst all the fun and games we have - we are also able to reflect on more serious things from time to time.

The post below is a very personal one to me and I am not expecting everyone to read it - but if you do take the time to read it - Thank you ...

Ten years ago today I almost killed myself and over the last few weeks I have allowed myself time to reflect back on the events around that time.

It prompted me to write a short piece on mental illness which has been published on The Calm Zone website.

I partially wrote it for me, but more for others who are suffering from mental illness as a way to say - you can get better.

Part of me feels weird saying this but, I'd like people to share this so that we can help others who are going through the pain and suffering I went though. If the words I have written help just one person feel comforted and that they are not alone, then I feel I have helped.

I have pasted the link below - so if you do want to read the full thing you can ...

  2. Thank you for this, more people do need to know about mental health issue's. Am a support worker and many people are miss understood, in itself can cause problems. My wife have's bipolar that can lead to self harm and thoughts of ending live completely.

  3. Thank you.

  4. We need the public to be aware of these issues and what they can do to help and also the help that is available there for sufferers.
I deal with a lot of people with mental health issues and a lot of the time they have to deal with it on there own.

  5. Just read it.Very honest and strong writing. Thanks

  6. Just read it. Respect for being so frank and open. Hope it will help someone in the same situation. Mental illness is a very real thing and the chances are we all know someone affected by it.

  7. Thank you for the post. The Mrs suffers from PTSD and depression for going on 12 years and this has given me hope. Once again many thanks.

  8. Thanks for sharing

Always a brave move for someone to speak to their family and friends about a subject such as this, and even more brave to share with 'the world'. I clicked the link and read the whole piece. I wish this had not happened to you but I am glad you were brave enough to write the piece for others. Thank you and best of luck to you.
Now....where is that bloody Karma button ;)

  10. Thanks folks ... For me - it was quite a scary thing to share but the feedback has been very positive.

As I say - if me writing this can help just one other person - I'll be happy.

10 years is a long time and although for me it seems like a distant memory - I still live with reminders about that time.

At the time I would never have been able to say it - but going through the whole experience was (in reflection) the best thing to ever happen to me.

  18. I've suffered from depression on and off for about 16 years and 2003 was a particularly bad year for me too. Well done for pulling through and thanks for sharing. Mental illness is so common but there's such a stigma attached to it, hopefully your story will inspire others.
