I'm not a tyre guru but what pressure would/should I put into these 205/70 14's??

I brought the bus home today and the steering feels nice and light but I've put 40psi in all of them.

Your help is as ever appreciated.

i'm on 195 70 15 which isn't stock and i just put in the same as when i had 185/14 i would think 40 is too high for the front myself?

  3. The pressure carries the weight of the van - pressure x footprint = weight on the wheel. On that basis, reduce the pressures from Stock 185 numbers in proportion to the new width. Of course, stuff like sidewall stiffness will influence the required pressure, but a proportional reduction must get you close. Use a tyre depth gauge at 3 positions and look out for uneven wear, then adjust accordingly.

On that basis really really wide tyres wouldn't need any pressure, ask your local tyre supplier ;)

  5. I use factory recommended pressures regardless of the wheels and tires I'm running.

    Always seems to work right

    Light steering = over inflated

I know. Apparently this was a trick VW used with selling of the mk2 because they were so heavy.

I'll ask about but I rather like the feel of it at 40psi. Rolling resistance also seems improved on these tyres compared to my originals. I'll have to do an MPG comparison when I head out for TLB wintercamp 2014 give of take the discrepancy in speed and distance because I'm now running slightly bigger wheels to my original 195's.

  7. It didn't happen if no photo...

  8. Birdy - can you check my tyre pressures please? I usually run 40psi but Lime seemed to be banging about all over the road this morning....

    Will do.

I can't vouch for it now as my current mk2 has PAS.

  11. keep stock pressures

your vans still the same weight

My Mk2 doesn't and has no heavy steering issues.

People should man the ***** up. Or buy a 205.

Actually, a nice clean 205 is a nice car indeed.

40's just too much for the front, you might find youself carrying on straight ahead when you try and turn in the wet.
Check the max pressure written on the tyre, a pair i had on for a while were max pressure 35lb's.

  14. ^^^^^ hmm, in that case, keep mine to stock pressures then Stuart!

  15. But pressure doesn't equate to weight, pressure x contact patch = weight. With bigger tyres you have a bigger contact patch so need less pressure.
