Had a hankering after one of these since I dove my cortina in to the back of a fellow apprentices yellow one back in 91 . Completely opposite to my Street triple RS but still fun .. Hopefully a quick winter project . Last on the road 2000 and picked up local .. I cleaned tank , ultrasonic cleaned carb , new plug ,oil and fuel and she started . Quick ride up the road and it goes but a bit of exhaust leak . I think the two wood screws don’t help .. It’ll need new tyres and seat and fix the cylinder head
Taken it even more to bits and measured bore and piston . Just on the limit so new piston and barrel. Luckily no VW or Porsche tax added to genuine Honda parts . I will go through and get it A1 mechanically but leave the blue ( distressed paint) . I’ve blasted and straightened a few black bits for powder coating
New barrel and genuine piston / rings , on inspecting and stripping head to repair the wood screw exhaust fittings head is scrap . The 6v heads have no cam bearings just just straight on the aluminium and well it has worn a pretty impressive groove . I could repair but bought all new head . Rear brake lever has worn shaft ( steel n steel) so I’ve bored and bushed and sleeved the shaft .
Few pics showing cam wear and new head . I aquablasted the engine covers and there was an impact hole so invisibly welded that and a couple other big dings ( pic is inside )
Every F ing screw is a struggle to get undone . Being Philips if my impact driver doesn’t undo them its the drill . As I’m changing the cam chain and all the sprockets I need to get the clutch off which is fighting every way to get the oil pump drive sprocket off
Beginning to think the last person in this locktited all the bolts . Clutch is off and access to oil pump so now oil pump drive is changed . Complete PITA . I think the wear on this motor was caused by blocked oil filter gauze. It’s all gone through the parts washer now ready to go back together Wear on oil pump drive
So it’s going back together . You can see the clean gauze, oil pump back together and I’m using Allen bolts instead of the cross heads
It’s back together. Timing set and valve clearances done . TBH I’ve quite enjoyed its mini rebuild . Hopefully it’ll go another 50 years
Engine is back in and running .. tyres are from 92 so off with the wheels , hubs and brakes . New bearing , new shoes and Aiqablast everything . Aquablasting leaves such a good finish on Aluminium pars
Aquablasting??? Is that being blasted with water? Back in the day we used to use media blasting. Sand I think it was.
Wheels blasted an painted , new tubes and tyres fitted Mud guards had a few dubious repairs so they are off , I blasted them today and a few cracks , reshape and weld some unwanted holes up
