anyone got a puller for steering idler pin bush removal

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grub, Jul 3, 2013.

  1. I am looking to beg/borrow/steal a puller to remove the bushes on my steering idler pin as there is a lot of slop in my pin.

Does anyone have one of these I could use to do the job?

I live in Solihull in the West Midlands so I could collect if local, or otherwise, perhaps someone could post me one and I could return it by post and reimburse you for the postage - or perhaps someone sells them?

    Any help gratefully received.

    Thanks.

For sale on ebay I believe, but some threaded bar, nuts, washers and an appropriately sized socket does the trick.

  3. I've got one I can post today...It's somewhat greasy, but that's just normal use! PM me if you're interested.

  4. You don't need a puller for bay bushings, only splitty.

Find something of appropriate size (socket?) and just punch it out. doesn't take much force, a little girl could do it.

  5. If you don't take pyroking up on his offer, PM me and I'll lend you mine.

  6. thanks for the kind offers guys - I will try and find a young girl to help me with the aid of a socket as per Sven's post, but if I get stuck I will pm either of you guys.

One thing, if I use a socket, I can;t get it in the middle to push the top bush out the top and the bottom one out of the bottom, so it is best to push them both out through the top or the bottom (guess it would be easier to push them both out the top (I assume there is no step in between the top and bottom bushes to stop me pushing them both out the same way?).

Just wanted to get a heads up before I start the job.

    thanks.

  7. Assuming you remove the grease nipple the bearing should both come out the same way. Both mine came out of the bottom. When reinstalling, the bottom went in from the bottom, top from the top. Don't forget to remove the grease nipple or you'll cause damage!

  8. If you haven't taken the lever arm off the pin yet, it's worth clamping it down with a g-clamp to take the pressure off it before releasing the nut.

  9. thanks for the info pyroking & snotty.

  10. I've got the tool you need if you get stuck , i'm over in beoley redditch , pm me if you're interested , depending on what part of Solihull about 25 mins away

  11. Cheers bac2ba6 - i'm down by Land Rover, so yeah, probably about 25 mins away.

Is there any chance you could text me your no. matey - i'll have a go with a socket and if I get stuck I can give you a ring or a text and pop over to fetch it, sometimes forum messages can be a bit slow if you're in the middle of a job!

Probably going to be the early part of next week now when I have a go at doing the job.

  12. Did mine a couple of weeks back with a tool I got off eBay and it was so easy - so would highly recommend using a tool rather that having to do all the banging. You can willingly borrow mine, but sounds like you have other offers that wouldn't involve posting - do give a shout if you do want to borrow it though.
Good luck - was a job I was putting off but was really easy in the end!
