dunno then - land rover wannabes?

  5. Austin champ.
Theres one a couple of streets away from me. :)

  6. As above. Great to drive if a tad slow 4 speed box forward and reverse, optional selection for 4 wheel drive...drive on rears / engage fronts for 4WD. Thirsty buggers about 12 mpg if I remember corectly. Best ones Had RR RB40 4l petrol engines . I did have the pleasure (?) of driving one for a couple of years. They pre dated the Land Rover by a year or two.
Two versions were built a cargo/personnel and a mobile wireless vehicle.

  7. Austin Champs.
Quite good fun for 50 year old tubs.
We shared @Keith.H 's field with them.
They were completing some sort of obstacle course.
Look out for a thread of some idiot later trying the same thing in a lowered Beetle and then a Bus!

  8. They are indeed Austin Champs - I've always wanted one! Still saving for a Schwimmwagen, tho :(...

  9. One big advantage of the Schwimmwagen, I believe most repair work could be done in the field whereas the Champ being built like the proverbial brick privy had a lot of stuff listed as Base repair...one reason why it never went into long term full production for the Services. For example the two stage generator for the wireless version needed a two man lift it was so heavy!
Pardon me while I meander down memory lane!

  10. One of my teachers at school had a Champ - it was a great lump of a thing.

  12. The under sump belly pan could break your wrist if unsupported when let go. They really were over engineered...it was the odd things that caught you out like the water drain slot under the front duckboards. Go through a decent puddle and the wheelspray came up through like a water fountain. Most awkward if the occupant of the other seat happened to be wearing a skirt.
