Anyone running 16 steels?

  1. Hi All,

Currently have 15 " EMPI 5 spokes but fancy a change..... Love the classic look of a steel wheel with hub cap but still like to be a bit different?

Always thought that the bus would look well on a larger wheel. Seen a few busses on 17" rims and they look great but with such low profile tyres I imagine that the ride is quite hard, so was thinking that a 16" rim might be a good compromise?

I'm sure I've read that some 16" Mercedes steel wheels are the correct 5 x 112 PCD, is that right? But what about the width, offset and centre hole, are they suitable too?

Anyone gone this route or at least investigated it that might be able to shed some light and/or images?

    Thanks ;)

  2. i run 15 inch steels + hubcaps with 70 profile tyres

you will struggle to find a 16 inch rim a stock hub cap will fit on

  3. ive seen merc alloys on campers but not thought about steels...

  4. i had 16inch sprinter rims on my T25 syncro with big mud tyres on. Never tried to fit hub caps but the wheels went straight on ;)

  5. Skoda do a 16 inch steel rim with the correct PCD and offset and I believe they are 6 inches wide. Not sure if the hub caps will fit though

    paradox likes this.
  6. Thanks for the response all!

Some good leads there to investigate, cheers.

  7. check the hub around the centre of the wheel as this is where the hub caps fit

i bought some merc rims to use but the hump was far to sticky outy and didn't have the right shape for the hub caps

all the wheels listed above are for modern cars where the hub cap is the size of the wheel and clips to the outside edge of the rim

the white wheels is a stock rim, green merc rim (note the different shape) and the wheel on the camper is a rerimmed wheel, stock VW centre welded to a new larger rim

  8. According to my information, the Mercedes Sprinter wheels, have a 5 x 130 mm PCD, with 84 mm centrebore and 45 mm offset.

However, the Mercedes Vito wheels, have a 5 x 112 mm PCD, with 66•6 mm centrebore and 45 mm offset.

The Mercedes Vaneo (based upon the Mercedes A-Class - not to be confused with the Mercedes Viano, which is based upon the Mercedes Vito) wheels have a 5 x 112 mm PCD, with 66•6 mm centrebore and 35 mm offset. At first glance, these might seem ideally suited, but the load rating would probably be inadequate!

The Mercedes C-Class wheels, have a 5 x 112 mm PCD, with 66•6 mm centrebore and 37 mm offset

I suspect that the Skoda wheels, have a centrebore of 57 mm, in common with various Audi, Seat & VW cars, which is too small for either the 1971~79 VW Type 2 or the 1980~92 VW Type 25.

I too am seriously considering the use of 16 x 6 inch or 16 x 6½ inch wheels, probably in combination with 195/65 R16C or 205/65 R16C commercial van tyres, which have become increasingly common on modern vans.

In circa 1982~84, I read some conference proceedings at university, about wheels & tyres, one topic of which, dealt with the effect of tyre aspect ratio, on rolling resistance and hence fuel economy, for tyres of nominally the same external circumference. A graphical plot of rolling resistance versus aspect ratio in % (80, 70, 65 & 60), resulted in a U-shaped curve, the bottom of which closely corresponded to the 65% aspect ratio.

  9. Hi Naskeet,

Thanks so much for that very detailed answer.... this is just the kind of info I was looking for and reminds me exactly why this forum is so useful... all these friendly and knowledgeable people with a common interest, whom don't mind putting in some time and effort to help each other out! :)

Continuing the questions.... What is the centrebore size of the Type 2 then, is that 66.6mm also?
If so, and remembering your comment about load rating... would you say that the C-Class rim would be better suited versus the Vaneo... as the C-Class are pretty heavy motors also surely?

Also, what about stud/bolt hole size... would you expect to simply be able to use the existing wheel nuts or would Mercedes Nuts/bolts be required?

    Thanks again!

  10. Hi Naskeet,

Sorry, just been looking a little closer at the links you posted and see that the T2 has a 68mm centrebore..... guess then that I'd need to get the Mercedes centres machined out, right?

    Thanks.

  11. Can anyone doubley (is that a word!!) confirm that the centre bore is 68mm.

Silly question, but is it the same front and back !!

  12. I heard the rear is 57.1
