  3. I warmed the pipe with a hair dryer for a couple of mins and it went on no problem :)

My next job will be the filler neck and the breathers behind the fire wall. My engine is coming out next week for investigative surgery so I will have a great opportunity to do these and be sure they are all new :)

  4. Not sure if this is a good idea, as its a breather it needs to breath so it should be vented somewhere safe. Top of the carb is ideal.

  5. Sorry, I should have been more clear,
The T was removed by PO, i need to sort it out and fit to Carb

  7. Well,
all the breather hoses now replaced with SAEJ30R9 spec hose.
Just the 2 Filler pipe hoses to go.
The breather joints were well shot, great thread pointing me in that direction - now to all those who need to take a look - DO IT NOW!!!

  8. You don't need to put clamps on breathers. :)

  9. any need to take them off?

  10. No, it won't do any harm, you must have 7 foot arms to reach them lol. :)

  15. Hi folks , did someone say there is two screws underneath the van to remove to get the firewall out !? And is there anything else that needs removing to get it out ?

  16. This post was recommended as a newbie to all this and guess what I found.......a fuel hose breather than came off in my hand on the left behind the spare wheel housing. Have ordered the replacements from peter at air cooled works. This site is fantastic for us just learning. Am now trying to work out how to get behind the firewall without taking the engine out. Am sure people will tell me if its impossible. Have a single carb 2 litre pancake I think. Thanks

  17. Haven't done it myself yet, @basil78 , but other folk on here say you can remove the firewall on a 2litre bay without having to remove the engine, but you'll need to remove the carb, manifold, oil bath/breathers etc.

I'll be redoing my fuel lines soon so will let you know how I get on with my 2 lump!

  19. :( Stinky fuel smell on our road trip yesterday after fuelling up - spent the whole homeward journey looking in mirrors checking for smoke! The fuel lines were replaced last year, no idea if the guy checked the breather connections or the filler neck...my guess is 'no'!
Am now petrified to drive the damn thing after reading all this! and there is a SEVERE lack of decent VW mechanics round here so I have no idea who I will get to fix it. Poo. :(

  20. Where do you live? There must be a good guy near to you.
