Ball joint boots

  1. Failed the MOT on split ball joint boots. :(
The tester says the joints are ok just need to change the boots on the lower ones.
Any hints tips or advice before I start?

  2. You'll need a long reach 27mm socket, and a really good ball joint splitter

Don't forget to mark where the camber nut dimples point, so you can just realign them

  3. and be careful once the new boots are on as can be easy to tear trying to get the joint back into the spindle :(

  4. Mine came with some little metal retaining clip spiral things for the base and i damaged one boot trying to get them on so after an hour or so i used very small cable ties instead, so much easier

27mm spanner, I never use ball joint splitters, for ease of access remove the caliper disc and backing plate, jack the hub up on the bottom ball joint until the van lifts, wedge something between the bump stop bracket and upper arm, release the jack, undo the lower balljoint nut, give the hub a whack or 3, when it goes same again on the top one :)

  7. +1 for the shock with a hammer treatment...

  8. sore point with me ball joint boots,...the one I fitted were shocking quality and and looked more like a contraceptive diaphragm....I honestly think it was the worst product I have replaced...I should buy a new ball joint.and swap the boot from it. rant over.

i've done a few on mine, got the nack now, got the dearer ones from cool air no complaints on quality

  10. I got mine from Cool Air too so that's a good start.
P*ssing down with rain now so no chance of doing them today. :(

  11. Buy the best quality you can and hope they last over a year:mad: . Such a shame the manufacturers don't pay that £0.001 more per unit to use better quality rubber so that you don't have to replace every year! Or is that the reason:rolleyes:
