Broke down again.........

  1. Great day out, driving home and the van stutters a bit coming up to a busy junction and then cuts out, nightmare ensues getting it to a safe place, my 11 year old ends up steering while I push. Can't restart it, aa called, try again after 20 mins and manage to get it going again and make it home. Strangely this is what happened to me before about 1000 miles ago. Can't work it out, seems to be ok once it cools down. I changed the choke last time and thought I'd solved it but am wondering if its the carb. Any ideas, thanks :)

Top tip - when you brake down somewhere like that, just sit there calmly until the aggrevated drivers push you out of the way. People love pushing campers for some reason - almost like it's expected and something everyone should try at least once.

  3. give your 11 yr old a £20 for being able to steer one of these:thumbsup::thumbsup:bl**dy heavy things

In the good old days my dad used to let me sit on his knee and steer. He denies it now, but I remember well - MK1 cortina.

I'd first try the coil. That sounds like classic coil behaviour.

And then do what I had to do  : ignition switch, rewire power lead from switch to coil. New coil. Electronic distributor. New fuel lines. I had a year of these awful intermittent problems. Barry's running ok now.

I worked hard for that award. And it gave so much joy to others

  10. righto, out with the JK catologue again. Bang goes the new front door fund. I was wondering about replacing the carb for good measure as well, worth doing? I noticed I had quite a bit of fuel dripping out of it when i first lifted the lid but i thought i may of just been me flooding it? I think the throttle arm is quickly loose which isnt a good sign is it?????

If its a standard 34pict4 try the throttle spindle bushes replacement for a tenner on ebay and take the carb apart and clean it out thoroughly before giving up on it.

Check the cutoff valve and wiring too this will stop you at junctions as you lose the abilty to idle.

  12. Right just brought bush kit and gasket kit, in for a penny..........

  13. I meant to ask, my rear bumper was really hot although I could just about hold the dipstick, it is normal to be so hot or is it a sign of anything?

Normal, the spent cooling air blows straight at it and it's inches from the exhaust.

  15. Yeah my dad use to take me to an old airfield in Anglesey and do the same in an avenger.

  16. Sorry to hear about that - its not nice when it happens but its an unwritten Universal Law of Physics if its to break down it will be at a major road junction, usually on a Friday at 5pm in the middle of a busy town!
Anyway.... put that JK catalogue down.:)
Basics first... when was it last serviced? If it happened 1000 miles ago and nothing since why would it be a major component like a coil?
What engine do you have? 1600TP?
    Have you adjusted tappets?
    Have you adjusted points?
Is the rotor arm in good condition?
Choke set for summer setting? (Its been very hot this week, so hot dipstick could be misleading?)
Take the carb off and clean it. Check the gaskets to the inlet manifold are on tight and dry?
Do you have a fuel filter? Is it clean or full of gunk?
When you open the petrol flap do you hear a vacuum release (is the tank venting ok?)
Earth strap in the dizzy ok?
My old beetle ran for years leaking petrol out of the carb it wont stop the engine running but needs attending to for obvious reasons?
All the vacuum pipes in good condition?
Petrol pump in good condition ? (take the exit pipe off into a glass jar - get someone to turn the flywheel by hand (ignition off))
Is the Fuel Cut off solenoid working (ignition on - take wire on and off does it click?)
    Clean all Spade connectors.

Phew and a 100 other things but start with the easy stuff.

Then go back to the JK catalogue (other suppliers are available and a lot cheaper)

    Good luck mate.;)
