Broken aerial

  1. So we had much fun at Bristol Volksfest, but some wally left their inflatable mattress out in the wind and it blew my aerial off! I have the type that sits on the bump just below the windscreen. Pic attached. The ones on JK look like they will fit (although they don't have the VW logo like my, presumably original one). From my quick cider hazed glance at the weekend I couldn't immediately see how to access the aerial from inside the bus without starting to take the bus to pieces! Before I start taking the old one off from the outside I just wondered how easy it was going to be - is it a case of just unscrewing the old one and screwing in the new, or is there more to it than that? Thanks folks.

Unscew the nut on the top and catch the rest from the inside.

  4. Heritage I think used to do them. Believe they're made by Hella.

  5. Thanks guys

  6. Gar. Tried to fit the JK aerial I ordered yesterday but the new external fitting is smaller than the one above and unfortunately the lazy articles who re sprayed our bus didn't bother to take the aerial off, so this is behind the fitting and would show if we use the JK aerial. Managed to find what looks like an identical one to ours on Custom and Commercial and I'm hoping either the external fitting is the same size as the original so covers the old paint, or that I can just take the aerial bit itself out and feed it through our existing aerial fitting...Why is nothing ever easy?!

The OEM part is made by Hirschmann - quick search found me:

Tip for refitting it - give the hole a good spray with clear Waxoil, use a bent cotton bud to coat the inside of the hole (as this is where the rust usually starts, before replacing the aerial.

To help fitting it - inside the van extend the retractable part of the aerial so that you can poke it up through the hole relatively easily (rather than struggle locating it by reaching up trying to find the hole), and then pull it up to attach the top nut - if you seat it properly and tension it by pulling the mast part up (don't go all Hulk on it) the base won't spin and you can tighten it all the way.

  8. At least you've got the original hole - it's a tricky one to cut. As above, not too bad to fit a replacement.
