I remember my old man coming home with 'collectable' footballers heads made from some rock hard cream plastic....they were about the size of a walnut and had a base so you could display them....and all our glasses were from Esso!

I've always associated 'by the cringe!' as an exclamation by Yorkshireman (well, Hull anyway) Dogfood Dan in the comedy series Dogfood Dan and the Carmarthen Cowboy
