Any one used the repro cab door skins? what are they like to fit, do they fit? As i have 2 rust free doors that have large dents in large part of the skins near the front edges and i'm struggling to get the shape into them, they have been filled before but not particularly well so i'm wondering if i'll be better off re-skinning them rather that using shed loads of filler and still not getting the shape right? Thoughts please
That would still involve trying to get the shape of the door back though, Still maybe worth a go, are the skins a pig then?
I've never done a cab door skin. Can't be that hard, but as my custs are paying for labour an imported door makes more sense.
I used skins on mine and was suprised how well they fitted but they still needed filler as its quite hard to get them perfect. My doors were very rusty so i had no choice and im too tight to buy second hand doors. If yours are not rusty i would try to repair them.Like Zed said get a stud welder and slide hammer, you can improvise by welding washers on and a slide hammer to get the worst of the dent out.
I've done a few, they fit well, but they are a complete waste of time as the skin costs over half the price of an import door, the bottom almost always needs attention as well. I replaced the bottom of the door as well as the skin and it's still not as good as a import door. Plus I hung them up to paint them today and the repaired door is now noticeably lighter than the rot free one
That's all well and good but most of the main players don't have any rust free imports at the mo and the ones that do are charging through the nose. I fear over the next 5-10 years skins may be the only option.
Absolutely, unless they start making the repro door bottom again, we're in trouble. In a round about way, I was saying repair the dent in the good genuine door rather than .
That is clever, but i reckon thats the same kind of dent that wouldn't take much of a tap from the inside to pop out, more of a flex than a dent, mine seems to have a bit of a crease in it, i may be going a bit over the top, as its largely filled at the moment, and tapping it you cant really hear that there is any filler in there, but its probably nearer 3/4" than 1/2" at its deepest point
I need a new drivers cab door too. Bottom is a bit messy. Whos imported doors are people talking about?
Do you have access to a welder? If so tack some nails in the dent and clamp some mole grips on and give it a good old tug You should be able to get the dent shallower this way
I'd definitely have a go at what paradox suggests. I've just spent about 2 days filling and sanding dents in my otherwise good rust free doors. Start with a 80 grit paper on a large sanding block (I use a large piece of polystyrene which is slightly flexible) to rough out the shape. It's time consuming, but you do get there in the end.
