The countdown to The Great Glastonbury Festival Ticket Lottery has begun (0900hrs Sunday 5 October) and wondering If I'm lucky enough to get tickets whether to take the van. Previous years I've always been under canvas for me. So in the ideal world I'd drive up on the Friday afternoon, pop the top, do the lecky hook up and stick up my awning (rather than getting stuck in traffic on the Wednesday, hoofing the gear a couple of miles from the car park and fighting for a muddy spot of field close to me mates and then waiting around a couple of days for the fun to start.)
So what are people's experiences of taking their vans? Was there enough space, we're you parked miles away and did youngest stuck in the mud? Is it easy to get a camper ticket? Would you do it again?

  2. Lecky! Hook up! Definitely an ideal Glasto!!

  5. Took the van this year.
Arrived Tuesday night, it was still a 40 minute walk to the gates each day.
Nice to come back to though.

Row - I was there 18 years ago too and my recollection is the same as yours but since then it's become much safer all round. Seems these days the kids are more interested in texting their mates to take drugs or even watch the bands. Anyway, before I get too grumpy, thanks Mr Fishtrousers for your account. Did you camp outside of the festival site itself? I assume you did for it to be a 40 minute walk just to the gate.

  7. I was in Glastonbury festival camper van east parking, all vans, caravans etc have to park there.
As I say, got there Tuesday well before gates opened.
There were a lot of vans.
No hook ups but toilets in better condition than in the show ground itself.
I couldn't do tenting there, it's not just the guy ropes that overlap, it's the tents!
I'm too old for that *****.

Thank you again Mr Fishtrousers. I've got a feeling that rucking up on the Friday in the van ain't going to work. I know what you mean about the tents and guy ropes - a friend of mine came a cropper on a rope and spent the night in his tent with a broken arm. Mostly spoilt his weekend.
Definitely need a bit more comfort and luxury as one gets older. I'm just going to have to mortgage the house again and get a yert for the weekend. Then again I could stay at home and watch it on the telly, and if I want a more authentic expierence I could get someone to pour a bucket of water over me. And block the toilet.

The festival is all radio 2 and hats now with lots of bmws in the carpark
The camper fields are good and well organised in rows but they are a long way up a steep hill from the festival

Top tip for the toilet situation when on site use the ones on the family field they are i bit nicer unlike the rest
