Hi all, Now this may be something obvious, but I am excited as I have just got my 77 running this evening, and god knows how many electricals now work!!! But when the engine runs I can get it in any gear, it's got a brand new clutch, and the cable is present, the clutch pedal seems a bit lifeless, goes in gear fine when it's not running. Any ideas? Is my clutch cable too slack? Would tightening it simply solve this simple problem?? Any help would be spot on. Cheers Austin
Nice one guys, cheers for the replies, how much adjustment is there on the cable? Or is there is much or as little as I need? Seems like a nice easy fix for a change, when quite ally of other things have fought with me on the bus!!
Loads of adjustment however, for whatever reason they are always too long for mine and I have to put a spacer under the wingnut (think its got a 13mm socket on there)
Lots of different length clutch cables i had to change mine on my 78 which i put a new clutch in so i had nice equal adjustment on the cable.
Work on the cable adjustment, I had the same issue in spring after new clutch, ours has about 10washers at the conduit to give the right tautness, been fine all year after that.
Cable lengths are horrendous these days... either too long, or are a struggle to get the wing nut started
Did you just fit the clutch or has it been stood a while? Could be clutch plate stuck to the fly wheel? Had this on an import bus. Stick it in 2nd then try starting the engine. Unconventional I know but it does the trick
WHS BE CAREFUL, I had the clutch plate rust onto the splines, after leaving the bus parked in the garage for 6 weeks, while I went on annual leave when I lived in Dubai. I got the engine running, then pushed the clutch pedal to the floor. (So far so good, all felt normal) Then I engaged reverse..........Blo$%y great BANG!! and the rear wheels spun on the spot!! At the next gearbox oil change I found a syncromesh tooth sticking to the mag plug I was very lucky, gearbox apparently suffered no ill effects. Tony
All sorted now, was way too slack, couldn't get it tight enough tho, so I had to use a tapered nut as a spacer, and it's spot on. Oh my god I have a van that drives now, just need to bleed the brakes and mot it!!! Cheers guys.
Well done mate! I felt similar elation when I sorted mine, I learnt that these vans are simple, don't think too hard and don't discount the simple solutions!
