Carb Specialist in Nottingham

  1. Anyone got any experience of D+B Carb Specialist in Nottingham?

As Im just gearing up to fit my dells I thought it prudent to have a back-up plan should I have issues and also to have someone look at it who was an expert in the field.

I called these guys and told them I was intending to remove a progressive weber and fit the dells and what the vehicle was. He advised me they are very familiar with air cooled vws and have worked on many of them. He doubted the wisdom of fitting Dells - saying they were expensive for parts, thirsty on fuel, ran rough bottom end and suffer from flat spots. (pretty good description of my weber tbh!).

He did say that he would be happy to sort out any issues and that whetever these were he didnt think it would be a problem (I assume thats providing the issues arent that its thirsty on fuel and runs rough bottom end with a flat spot).

This has dented my enthusiasm slightly and not sure my back-up plan is a good one!

As I say anyone used them (or indeed have ny appropriate comment to make)

Ive only ever heard good things about Dells......
Ash's 1600 with twin Dells was far and away the quickest (air cooled) bus I'd ever been in. It ran absolutely lovely!

  3. The bloke sounds like a muppet to me who has likely never even seen them and has no experience of them. He's trying to put you off politely.

I would advise that you set it up yourself then get it on a rolling road.

They will then tune is as it's going through the whole rev range and will be able to talk you through real time driving conditions and tune it to suit how you want it.

I put dells on my type 4 after rebuilding it and I'd say its likely the best engine upgrade I could have made without upping the actual engine output itself through expensive cams etc. It them took a further power step when I fitted the vintage speed exhaust.

Dells are superb, easy to keep in tune actually quite easy to set up, especially when compared to stock solex. You'll notice a massive improvement over your progressive. Parts are on the quite expensive side but then they rarely go wrong. There is the Italian guy in eBay who does cheap refurbs and I believe he is very good

  4. Stick them on yourself and take the bus to Pete burgess in alfreton. They have a rolling road and will set them up right. They have a lot of knowledge. Good prices for rolling road too.

Have you had your webber on the rolling road, as I know Keith who works there runs one on his split and swears by it, might be worth having that set up properly first if not see how you get on with it.

  5. The problem with the progressive on the type 4 engine is lack of preheated air. The intake runners are too long and you can end up with icing. They can also tend to wash the cylinders with fuel which can/will shorten engine life

Autotrnix developments must be good.....a friend of a friend, who is involved with Clio Racing and Silverstone race days, brings his cars up to these people for any carb / fuel injection work.

The guy did know his stuff, but I know @Dicky already has good carbs, more jets than Eurocarb and vents a plenty. I think he just needs the base settings to get him running and then a trip to a rolling road.

Anyone else reading this thread that does what a refurbished original carb the guy is Rage.....www.rage-keverondelen.nl

  13. This!!! is the worry 20k plus on a new engine with a weber on!!! It goes ok but does it go as well as it should. What is the likely outcome of barrel wash, will rings sort it or will they be glazed?

The chap who fitted @Ermintrude 's engine (John?) knows all about jetting Dells for dubs, I think he's in Nottingham.

  15. At some point I know you are going to tell me to stop whittling and get the *****er done! I can see it coming!;)

Not at all, you might as well get them built up with whatever the concensus says is the most likely combo of vents, jets and emulsions as try it, fail, and then do it again.

And as it's taken you 10 years to get this far, I'm guessing you're not in any particular hurry. ;)

  17. Paul at bus and beetle depot in Carlton. When I took it on the rolling road in Plymouth he said that it was about spot on considering Paul didn't have all the testing machinery. Laurie also had a hand in it too.

I talk to Laurie about jetting from time to time. One year he'll say "x" is what you want, then a year later he'll be raving that he's now discovered "y" is great.

I asked him once how come an old git like you still hasn't settled on jetting for the more or less standard set of engines you build?

He said "ah - that's the thing about jetting - nobody knows"

That's probably the truth of it as far as I can work out. Once you throw emulsion tubes into the mix, the possibile combinations are almost endless.
