Challenge: Test that your Split Charge works......without a multimeter

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by woollywelshbloke, Aug 22, 2013.

  1. Hi,

So how can it be done?

I have put a split charge system in my van. My set up:

I have a starter battery and leisure battery connected via a fused wire between the +Ve side of the starter, into a relay and out of the relay to the +Ve side of the LB.
I have each battery earthed separately
I have a blue wire from the main van relay to the split charge to act as my energiser
The relay is earthed to the van

Is there a way to test that the LB is charging without using a multimeter? (I dont have one!)

  2. Switch an interior light on which uses the leisure battery. Start and rev the engine until the alternator light goes out.
If the interior light brightens, the battery is being charged

  3. As above and if you can't tell if the light is getting brighter disconnect the +ve terminal on the leisure battery, but keep all the wires connected together. That way the interior light will be running purely from the Split Charge feed.

    What's the "main van relay"?

That would be the emergency flasher relay then...

Say hello to Nicky for me. :)

    Will do sir.

  8. Sorry, the main van relay is actually the voltage regulator....which brings me to another question. On a 1979 type 4 which wire is the ignition warning light feed? The blue wire from the regulator or the thin black wire from the alternator?

On my van both were snipped and ive used the blue wire from the regulator as my relay energiser.......these electrics spin me out! The thin blank wire is just flapping in the breeze now, is this the power wire to the fan blower maybe?

    Any help appreciated as always!

the blue wire is easiest to find on the regulator, look a few inches down to confirm - most of them have gone a crappy faded blueish/green colour where exposed.

The heater blower relay energiser wire is also blue (T'd off the same wire).
I thnk the thin black is to the computer socket.
