crossover sliding door lock operation

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Diddymen, Oct 7, 2013.

  1. evening all,

just re keyed my sliding door lock, with a kit from dubkeys .....turns out it was keyed right....just seized solid.....but thats another story

...anyway, I've got it all working....just not sure its working as it should.

on a cross over van, with the lock in the sliding door handle.....

so question is, how should the lock work, with it locked from the outside using the key, the handle is locked from moving.....so the door wont open even if the interior lock leaver is on or off.

    is this right??

basically.....is the key from the outside supposed to unlock the door if it is locked from the inside?....or is that like a second way of locking if you know what I mean???......I was expecting it to work like the cab door locks but it doesnt seem too

It should lock and unlock from the outside but mine doesn't and I have to lock it from the inside, I can't remember how my other earlys operated either? not much help soz.

  3. I can check tomorrow if that helps?

  4. I can lock and unlock from the outside. I believe I can lock it from the inside if its in the unlocked position outside, but can't unlock it from the inside if its in the locked position outside.

    Both buses are the same.
    :)

  5. mine locks from outside with key , but dont know if you lock inside whether someone can unlock from outside with key as never tried .

  6. If you lock inside you have to unlock inside. If you lock outside you have to unlock outside. Door must be latched (pull up on handle) to lock.

  7.

    cheers guys,

just to be sure we are all talking the same kind of lock, it is the sliding lock in the handle not a separate lock on the door like true latebays

I noticed when I took it apart, that the lock moves a small bar in the body of the outside handle, this bar locates in the chrome coller on the outside of the door (that comes out with the handle) which stops the outer handle from moving...and thus stops the door being opened from the outside when locked.

the locking bar only sits level with the body of the chrome coller....so I cant see how it would actuate any other mechanism in the rest of the door  ....and I couldnt feel anything through the hole with the handle out.....it was getting dark so I put it all back together....perhapse I've put it back together wrong

  8. cheers mate....so I'm not going mad :D

that sounds like how mine is operating  .....if I lock from the inside.....it wont unlock it with the key from the outside

Yup in essence you have 2 locking methods for the Same door but they are not connected to each other, also the collar fits either way but only works correctly when the collar is fitted correctly, can't remember which way round though, ps just remembered you got that bit from me

  10. cheers David

....I did get the coller from you......it wont fit in the hole though as it seems to have a few burrs on the key way where it locates in the door, so I've fitted my old one for now.....might have another go at fitting the one from you tomorrow :)

  13. Does yours have the little switch knob above the interior handle? Mines missing that bit and has a square switch which I believe locks it from inside. My understanding is that should be able to lock and unlock from both inside and out fella?
Might be a question for prototype bay dot com?

  14. yep, mine has a little er.....leaver...for use of a better word, located above and to the right of the inner sliding door handle (RHD slider on left)

the leaver/knob is about 15mm long from memory

  15. Hi

Yes the lock in the outside handle means the door cannot be opened from the inside and is completely independent from the plastic lever lock inside.

I use the key if just popping out but if parking up properly I use the thermal lock as it is stronger.

    Cheers

  16. That was meant to read internal lock (not thermal lock) although it sounds far more exciting! A bit sleep deprived here with a 4 week old!
