Custom headlights

Discussion in 'Modified Shizzle' started by Llardy, Apr 10, 2023.

  1. Hi has anyone got customised headlights with DRL and indicators built in? I had some from the US but they’ve died (and we’rent legal)

Totally stuck now because I need an MOT (Subaru conversion) and I can’t see in the dark! Or indicate.

I have thought of building my own but I can’t get the lens off to put the DRL halo / indicators in. I’ve tried heating them up but got scared. Maybe I try again? 100 degrees for 10 mins

Any advice or urls to custom builders most appreciated, Chris

  2. Here’s the lamp I’m thinking of butchering and adding the halo which is a drl and an indicator

  3. If the lenses are bonded in like modern factory unit, supposedly heating them will loosen the bond enough for you to be able to pry the lens off, but my backside would be twitching nicely trying it.

I guess if they are busted already, nothing ventured, nothing gained

  4. Maybe just borrow some stock head lamps to get your mot then worry about the custom shizle afterwards?

btw stock unit with led bulbs should give you good light output and are 100% legal provided your bus was registered pre ‘86. Plug and play.

The frit glass to metal seal AFAIR needs maybe 180C .. but because it has LEDs in there it's probably going back with some silicone /PU adhesive .. I have done it with 1970's Lucas units a couple of times.

I would separate headlamps and indicators , use H4 reflectors and LED bulbs from Classiccarleds.co.uk, avoid Chinese lottery LEDs off eBay.. trick is buy bulbs rated from at least 12v to 24v as these will have proper regulators in them, not just resistors that burn out or desolder themselves or burn out the LEDs as you found..

  6. Well I tried different degrees and lengths and was so close but then cracked it. It was only then I noticed I had left hand drive headlights. Will these even pass the mot?! Won’t the reflector back cause an issue? What I didn’t realise is the old headlights have removable plastic lenses so I’ve took those off to use on these. I’ve also decided to get smaller halos for the indicators which come on Tuesday.

Any advice on the LHD housing? I should be able to build these this week but not sure if I’ll have to buy RHD housing.

    Cheers Chris

If you want to pass the MOT.. you may even have to reconsider that... fitting orange LEDs in the spots and using as "indicators" .. the price of over-modification in legally sensitive areas.

  10. It’s the lense that designates lhd or rhd not the reflector I think:thinking:

  11. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Unless you had some aftermarket ones like mine which have a clear lens and pattern on the reflector.
