Door cards - options other than vinyl?

  1. Hi there,

Whilst Daisy is getting her body sorted with Manflowers my mind has turned to planning out the interior. I want to keep it quite simple and comfy feeling, full width bed and not much furniture. I've seen a couple of buses with fabric covered door/panel cards rather than the classic vinyl, and I prefer it - BUT, will it be a pain long term? I'm thinking more likely to get dirty and less resistant to moisture.

Much as I've seen loads of awesome looking campers with stylish two-tone vinvyl, it just ain't my bag. I'd be interested in peoples thoughts on whether it's a no-go idea or not? Also any pics of something different that you did with your cards would be of interest.

Thanks for helping. As soon as she's back home, I'll post some pics to share how we get on with fitting out the inside :)

  2. hi, my pal's got an early and his door and panel cards are covered in denim. he also put in larger versions or jeans pockets to store stuff too. it looks amazing and i don't think he's had any issues with muck, especially as he used dark denim.
you could use some wipeable fabric like oilcloth or scotchguard whatever you use? (no idea if scotchguard works, btw) also, it'll be quite cheap to replace too.
I have some 60s/70s wallpaper which i was going to use but it did fit in with my new colour scheme :)

  3. I saw one fitted with jeans fabric the other day,,even had the back pockets on,,:)
    ooops,,a bit late

  4. :D haha! was it a baby blue early? :)

i really like the idea of fabric coverings as it does make it cosier BUT they will hold in cooking smells more than vinyl and i had to consider a 2 year old nephew who constantly has jam on his fingers :D

  5. who in theire right mind will cook inside the bay ? ;)

  6. ok, what i nearly put was about smoking, but i know that's not terribly fashionable atm so went for food smells. mine would hum like a 70's headmasters office.

  7. oh,,and you'r right,,it was a baby blue one. Don't remember where i saw it, but yes :)

  8. Will have a look into scotch-guard type protection that could be added to make it a bit more resiliant.

Ermintrude - cooking smells a good point, but expecting most cooking to be going on outside as I'm going to make the cooker unit removable. No little people to spread jammy hands, but thinking maybe vinyl for the cab where dirty shoes much more likely to come into contact.

  9. you could still use some foam or batting so that the cards are soft fabric AND squishy! it'll be gorgeous!
Originally i wanted my R&R bed to be upholstered like an old ticking mattress with pie edges and big buttons in a nice ticking fabric :D - i went for the conservative/practical vinyl in the end though :/

  10. That sounds fab! I'm definitely having fabric for the bed cushions, but as I'll be doing it myself it probably won't end up too fancy.

  11. i have LOADS of fabric. some would say i'm a hoarder, i wouldn't. i do have some upholstery ones too (in for sale thread) and happy to do a deal on it. fabric is my favourite-ist thing! can't believe i ended up with vinyl but i will have lots of blankets, throws, cushions etc :D
doing the bed won't be too difficult, the piecrust edges and buttons are all hand done. admittedly, i wanted mine to be a proper luxury handmade mattress... ahh, dreams.
you could collect vintage fabrics and do a patchwork of them for door cards and bed..? not squares like a patchwork quilt but like a collage overstitched with decorative/contracting stitching.....?
sorry, i get carried away :D

  12. i got some old danger mouse albums and tore them up and pasted them on my panels with a mix of wall paper paste and pva glue heres a old pic of the kick panels done. all the panels are done now but got no pics of them

  13. That is soooooo cool! We have two tone vinyl. In the old wedge we had years ago we had the same material they put on the walls / inside of coaches ... Matt was given a load by a supplier that they didn't want! It was plain not patterned I hasten to add!

  14. Mine used to be covered in denim. Only removed it last year and bought new panels and recovered them in foam and expensive duvet covers. Stetched, cut and stapled over a foam backing. Had the rear seats covered as well. At work so no pics!! May be able to grap some of my facebook page. I'll have a quick look

  15. Would love to see some pics when you are able to get at them.

dickie12 - love it. I'm considering doing something similar with vintage travel posters on the pop-up roof.

Ermintrude - girl after my own heart! Had to clear out my fabric stash when I last moved, so I understand it's not hoarding at all ;)

Im going to do me DOKA cards and kick panel in hessian, I have some NOS brightly printed seed bags.

  17. I had exactly the same issue with our Molly, the bodywork had been done but the interior was shot me & Mrs Robo decided on material for the door cards as a professional re-trim of the usual vinyl was outside of the budget...

We eventually agreed on this pattern material...

We're happy with how it's turned out, we went for a full width bed foam recycled from old interior & new brown covers made by my mum! I'm glad Mrs Robo convinced me as I'm rubbish with colour matching...

I've got my mum back on the sewing machine running us up some new curtains too!

On the panels we used some thin wadding over the original ply panels & then went over that with the material, spray floor adhesive & gaffer tape did the job :)

Here's a few cruddy before shots to compare...

  18. Robo - good job! Shows it doesn't have to be expensive to look great. Did you use staples on the back? to hold the fabric in place?

PIE - I saw a split somewhere with hessian panels and it looked really good. Pics when done please.
