Early sliding door on a late?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Russbmx, Dec 15, 2012.

  1. And the questions start ;D

Both sliding doors on my 74 need skins and work around the windows so to save time I would rather get new doors. I just wondered if early doors fit late bays?
If so does anything need to be swapped over etc? Also would the late glass fit the early door?
    Cheeers!!

Does your 74 not already have early doors? I don't remember the change date, but someone will advise shortly...
The only difference is the locking mechanism, so as long as you have the right bolt on bits to go with the door, any door will fit.

  3. i think the magic 76 is the change on sliders...

Russ... have you checked out the price on rust free sliding doors?? be prepared for a shock... I've spoken to a few breakers, and you're looking at upwards of £400 per door... one place said £800+ if he had an early style slider...

I thought the doors all fit each other early/late but the catch lock changed on the later ones.. I think.

Reminds me, I've got to get the 3 sliding doors I've got repaired and sold!

  5. Ahhh so mine might have early doors already?

I know of some fairly cheap early Lhd Cali import doors that are local to me so I was thinking of having one as they are dry and rust free.....just a few dents which doesn't bother me to much but at least one side would be sorted and maybe repair the other side.

If I put pics of my doors up will any one be able to tell me if they are early or late ones?

    Cheers for the replies

Early doors have the lock within the handle.

  7. Right. My drivers side (lhd) door has a separate lock so I'm guessing this is late?

But the passenger side (rhd) door has a lock with in the handle so I'm guessing this an early door?

    Correct on both counts.

  9. so you should have 2 doors with the lock in the handle...

is 1974 the registered date or manufactured date?

  11. it is a 74 dude... it's got the late filler cap... and 74 was first year for it

Actually, having a look at the numbers, 74 is the year that the sliding doors went to separate locks too... so Russ, your sliders should be late ones (separate lock)

i didn't look at the filler, the reason i was asking was the lock in handle/door itself thing, if i recall the latch on the door frame is slightly different on the early slider - unless i imagined that...... but i too would agree that it should have the more improved seperate lock in the door.

Sliding doors are so silly expensive now, and you can't see both sides at once... and it's also hard to get the left side one...

Unless you're going to be troubled by not having all bits correct for the year, it's possibly more a case of fit what you can get?
