Egr valve removal

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Borninabug, Apr 28, 2013.

  1. Is it possible to completely remove the egr valve from a 2l FI motor and blank the place it attaches to the plenum chamber. My van has the pipe folded over under the tinware before it reaches the exhaust. By PO not me. Just seems that what's left is not required if its not attached to the exhaust.

But have you disconnected the EGR warning system??

I'm waiting for my light to come on but I did reset it last year because I had an itchy and wanted to press the button

  6. There is no little box under the dash it's been removed at some time in the past so no light

The EGR valve light is attached to the speedo cable. Behind the kick panel is a black box with a cable going to it and one from it and a 3 pin socket.

Always made me laugh that though we have the CAT warning symbol in the binnacle, it wasn't actually wired up with a bulb or anything.

yes ripped all out and 1 piece speedo cable fitted

  9. Aren't dash lights part of the new MoT rules? ie tester should make sure it comes on when the ignition is on and goes off when the engine is started or was the light on the box that was ripped out?
Could always connect it to the battery charging or oil pressure light so it looks like its working if it is still there, no harm having an extra light, more chance of noticing it if it comes on when driving?

doubt a tester would look for a egr or cat light on a 40 year old van, plus you could always explain it was only for american market etc

  11. No cat on the exhaust so no light!!!
My friendly Mot man is great. I get my bug done there and he usually lets me watch up close and talks me trough every check and test. A rare breed these days.

I have VW documents that clearly state that the CAT light was not actually wired in. But I'm not sure of the year cut off for fascia lights if there is one certainly when it comes to EGR etc. We had one fail recently on the indicator warning light not working.
