electronic ignition

  1. Want to fit electronic ignition to my 1977 Bay . Who does the best kit ?
    Cheers Russ

  2. I use Accuspark. it has been brilliant. I bought an accuspark SVDA dizzy from ebay. Don't buy a petronix dizzy or the petronix leads. just use your standard dizzy and Beru leads.

russtynuts and Molteni Mike like this.
  3. The best is 123 ignition, selectable advance curve, a bit pricey at around the £300 mark though

  4. For that sort of money you can go mega jolt and do away with the dizzy completely and have completely mappable timing , I have pertronix at the moment but going mega jolt for the S/C to retard timing on boost

  5. I`ve only had petronix so can`t comment on others ....
Fitted it about 15 years ago and NEVER had a problem - speaks volumes in my opinion !!

    Fit and forget ..

  6. A Pertronix is fine...but so pricey. I had one for a couple of years and it was fine.

If you're on a budget, find an old Sparkrite unit. They work a treat :).

And don't forget to keep a set of points in your glove box for if it goes bang!
    ;)

  8. Really ??
    Never thought of that ....

If points wear you simply adjust them and drive on; if an electronic module goes bang it's big yellow taxi home unless you've got a spare or some points...
Never seen the point of electronic ignition personally, points are cheap an cheerful.

  10. I had a pertonix which failed after the engine was started twice.

I've since used 5 accuspark modules (not full dizzy) over a period of around 4 years and they still work on each of the engines they're fitted to.

Cheap enough to keep a spare in the glove box
    ;)

  11. "How does that work then Ted?"

What goes where the dizzy is?
    :)

  12. Go
Google mega jolt. ... It uses a missing tooth crank ring and hall sensor ,ecu same as modern cars .
You blank off dizzy hole and remove the drive .
Used a lot on tubo set ups as you can map it to retard on boost which is what I need . Although I know very little it's going to be a steep learning curve

  13. I use a powerspark module. Has been fine for a few years. I carry another dizzy set up ready with points.
Reason I went with powerspark was the reputation of the guy selling them. Check out simonbbc (best British classics) great rep throughout classic car scene.

  14. We fitted pertronix after a summer of annoying hot starts. Even more annoyingly, when it wasn't warm the engine would also start at first turn, and now it ruddy doesn't. Meh.

  15. That's rich...coming from a man who did away with the VW engine all together:D

It's not so much the points etc. that are the problem...it's the fact that dizzys and drives get worn, and new replacements are rubbish, unless you went for something expensive like a Mallory. Even the SVDA's are disposable.
The stock engine needs as much help as it can get, and wobbly timing doesn't help...electronic modules are a band aid IMO
You don't see many Ford Focus drivers carrying a spare ECU and coil pack just in case the current one goes t*ts up

No but they don't use crappy Chinese made aftermarket rubbish!

Oh ye, I forgot about my new engine!

  18. Megajolt...but needs a different set up altogether
    Mallory or MSD...expensive
    123...expensive
SVDA....budget upgrade based on Bosch Mexico copy...good reviews on here

  19. shouldn't that be "lubbish" ? or am I being Chinese-ist?
