Engine and gearbox in one go?

  1. I'm looking to drop the engine and gearbox out of the pickup and swap it with the engine and gearbox which is in the pretender.

What's my best option? I'm thinking if I drop engine and box together I can high lift the van and leaver everything else fully assembled, just undo the drive shafts and drop it all straight down. I'll be using myotorbike jack, will it be safe to straddle the bell housing/engine without doing any damage?

Has anyone done it this way and what's the pros and cons?

Pick up is type 1 engine, pretender is type 4

  2. It's easy enough, just much less manageable on your own. Don't forget to disconnect the gear shift coupling just in front of the gearbox!! For the sake of 4 bolts, I think it's easier to split the engine and box in the van really.
Did you get my pm's by the way;)

  3. I prefer to remove/install type 4 this way.

When ever I've tried to install engine onto gearbox I can never get the input shaft aligned. Type 1 seems easier as I can use the fan shroud to wiggle it about and get it aligned.

Type 4 + gearbox is very very heavy, but I've removed and installed single handed. Just used two trolly jacks.

  4. pull it out in 1 if you have the gear, i always use 2x large trolley jacks and 2x people too adjust the jacks as its coming out

  5. Type 4 coming out in one is easy but heavy. Think it's about 120 kg. going back I've found it easier as two parts. Lessen the risk of damaging gear hockey stick. Also easy to bolt box back up and drive shafts when you can sit in engine bay. Type one much lighter about 80 kg so less chance of damage

  6. I did this. Easy enough. Used a £65 jack of ebay,
Use a bit of wood and 2 straps to hold it steady, make sure the van is high enough and it comes straight out.

Edit: have a quick look at page 1 of my resto.. About 1/3rd down the page, shows the jack etc

  7. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

The 1600 engine and box is easy - even easier in an early.
The T4 engine and box is a different ball game but on the motorbike lift should be ok.

  8. Ah, I didn't fully read the first post, I thought he was just dropping a t1 from a pickup.
