The stock service kit for a 34PICT3 includes a new needle valve. Which is the standard centre mount fitted by VW.

  2. The float valves that come in the rebuild kits are poor
They have a ball bearing in the end which falls out and they often stick

  3. Second this comment. I clean the old needle valve and change the floats as they can get loose. The new needle valves in the kits are awful cheap crap!

  4. hi mike and paradox, thank you for your thoughts, so how do you clean this needle float, is there an instruction manual. The left carburettor leaks the right seems ok, should I do both?

To clean it blast with carburettor cleaner aerosol spray through the straw provided with the can of cleaner. Both ways , shake it and keep trying, or get @davidoft to blow through it. Which is cheaper but you have to come to Techenders..
If you have one of those ultrasonic cleaner machines they work too.
In the end though you may have other dirt around the place - I once had a Morris Marina where the float jammed down into the rust in the bottom of the float bowl at 100 mph (downhill past Rownhams services M27 eastbound about 1986) and the fuel tank then emptied over the next 5 miles or so.

However, wear and tear can result in cleaning not being good enough and a new valve might still be needed.
I would do both sides and think about doing the fuel hoses too.

  6. Thanks Mike

All the hoses have been checked and a new fuel filter installed. When the AA mechanic repaired the left leaking carburettor. It looked very fiddly and awkward. I will look at it next week and decide to attempt or pass.
