Engine numbers

  1. Hi,

Got a query, I pick up my Late Bay on 9th/10th November, and it's got a 1584 T1 engine, however, I've also got a 412 LS Variant, and had thought it had a 1795 engine from 1973.

Turns out the engine number in the 412 doesn't match those listed for T4's on the Type 3 and 4 Club database, so I'm now suspecting I have a replacement engine from a T2 Late Bay or early T25, and now have no idea of the capacity, ha. The tin ware and carbs appeared different to someone with another 412LS, and they suggested it might be out of a 411, but again the engine number doesn't match any 411.

Does Engine Number CB003660 relate to any T2 engine?

  3. So 1679cc? That is odd, you'd have thought they'd just fix the original 1795 engine rather than source another, seems th carbs are for a T2 as well, they have strange plastic volume control screw taps easily found and turned during tuning, which you'd expect for the cramped T2 engine bay.

I therefore suspect that they didn't use the 1795 barrels, since they used the 1679 carbs, however, it sounds very powerful on tick over, so it could have different barrels and until I read the stamping a on the carbs I'll have no idea of the actual capacity, could even be 2.0 litre for all I know, oh well, makes it interesting.

You're quite right it could be anything in a CB case. I got excited when I thought my Westy had an 80HP WO code engine, but it was just the case. :(
I replaced it with another T4 engine for £150. I didn't care what engine it was, it worked and didn't leak as much. Parts were cheap not so long ago and it wasn't worth the effort of fixing an engine when you could just slap another one in "while the engine was out".

The plastic volume screws are not t2, they are type 3 I think, I have a 412ls too :) cool ain't they !

  6. I have an original spec T3 1973 twin carb, still has the engine number it had from the factory, the carbs look nothing like those on the 412, I can't check the carb bodies for stampings until Monday now as I'm busy the weekend, however, T3s were never fitted stock with T4 engines.
