Morning the engine support bar A: do I really need it I know VW put it there for a reason but bearing in mind bugs/splitties and I am right in thinking early bays don't have them ? B: is there some sort of adapter kit out there to fit one and if so where could I get one ? Cheers Steve
Yes you need it bugs and splits have the gearbox supported differently early bays have a engine support if you want to fit a bug engine in a bay you will need this http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares...hop.product_pID_118797_lang_EN_country_GB.htm
Cheers matty does anyone know if there as good as a bay case or am I better off holding off till I can get a engine with the holes in for the support bar ?
Ste, Gusbus had a bug engine fitted when we first got him - he had the same mount & although the engine was shot, it held firm! I have yet to locate the old bracket, I think I still have it but cant find it yet
Just to add, being an early it had no intermediate support at the bellhousing like yours does, so it had a lot of weight and vibration to soak up.
So do some pump covers with nothing attached to them. I was sceptical too, but I honestly think they're fine.
I bought one to fit to a B case that I bought, but never got round to it. They look ok, but might need some fettling. You'll also have to drill and tap one of the bosses on the case, as I recall. The thing had a ground metal plate as an oil pump cover, which should seal ok. They won't work if you've got a oil pump cover that taps oil off for a full-flow filter - they're not compatible with that kind of arrangement.
the one that came with the engine had all that done to it but there was no way it was going to work or fit the support bar and engine so the lot went back
