Exhaust Fumes

  1. Need some advice - new heat exchanger or not ?

My 1973 bay has strong smell of exhaust fumes, so went of holiday with
the beach towel on the dash covering the vents -sorted.

Just taken one of the heat exchangers off - it has a hole on the outside and a couple of slit holes on the bottom underneath, but I've blown through and the center exhaust tube with one end blocked and there's no leaks from the inside tube - only black lips.

Surely the outer holes would only loose heating, so I can't see when the exhaust smell is coming from.
Is mine a typically knackered in this state or not ?

The 2 studs where the upper part of the heat exchanger exhaust fits on are corroded. How do you replace these?

    Thanks

  2. What engine is it .I have type 4 with nearly new exchangers that i would sell to get some j tubes as replacement

  3. Are you sure you haven't got an oil leak - push rod tube seals are the usual culprits - that's dripping oil onto the heat exchangers? You're right in saying that a hole in the outer skin will only leak cooling air. If the inner (exhaust) pipe is ok, then it's fine.

Any weird smells that get into the engine compartment will be piped through to the cab, as the heating air is sucked in by the cooling fan. I'd check for oil leaks.

  4. For my own bus, holed outers , I exhaust cemented then bandaged them and exhaust cemented again then heat painted . if studs u/s, replacements are available. Hope this helps.

  5. Thanks - Will patch them.

I am thinking it maybe more of a petrol smell so will check pipes. It's smelly as soon as the engine is running from cold.

Steveagain - It's a type 1 engine (fan house and, alternator stick up in the middle), but will patch mine.

I take it a scientific as going for it with my monkey wrench and hoping the studs come out.

  6. Good plan

  7. My money would be the donuts and clamps leaking where the HX go into the muffler

  8. oil leaking from the rocker covers, if your bus has been standing for a while....take your time with those studs....two nuts locked on and plenty of plus gas...heat from a blow torch if you got one....if all else fails mole grips....close the grips up so that your head shakes when you clamp on
Tip of the week....try turning it in, rather than out...;)

Is your rear door rubber seal good and sealing well , If its worn or perished and not giving a good seal ,or is there one , it will suck in exhaust fumes vortexing at the rear .
