Fire wall sealing tape

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by icepug, Nov 6, 2013.

  1. What tape should I use to sealed the fire wall back in? I do have some fire glazing tape at work but one it's fitted it would be a mare to remove. What do you guys use? Cheers in advance

  2. I just screwed mine back on!

  3. A fire wall seal. :)
    What engine do you have?

It's more an anti rattle foam than a seal , I used house door draught excluder :)

  5. The seal's to stop it rattling. Neoprene foam tape or similar is fine.

    +1 for draught excluder.

  7. I asked what engine simply because I have a 1600 firewall seal sat in my shed, bought by mistake. Any good to ya?

The clue is in the name "Firewall". The seal is to do just that - make an airtight seal.

  9. I don't believe VW ever intended it to be a "firewall". It's just a metal panel.

Splitties and my 68 don't have it. It's a safety thang, not just a metal plate.

  11. So what's the gasket material then?? ;)

  12. The cheap foam strip they used everywhere, that turns to dust over the years.

I honestly think it's just a closing panel, mebbe to give the tank a bit more protection in a rear-ender.

  13. It'll be a firewall as per the term, but all it will do is slow the fire down by around 2 minutes, so I would say that the foam seal is just a foam seal!! :)

  14. modern intumescent glazing tape tape will be 100% better than the original stuff VW used
