Fuel filler pipe (eek)

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by pyroking, Jun 16, 2013.

  1. Knowing that the rubber around the fuel filler pipe is rapidly disintegrating, I figured I should check out the connection between the tank and the metal filler pipe. Looks like that one needs replacing too! So here's the question: Is there an "easy" way of getting to the clip around the top filler hose? I reckon that I can get to the tank end hose (given the length of my arms) through the access hole, but the top end will be a struggle unless the whole thing can be extracted through the filler hole when disconnected at the bottom.

Anyone got any bright ideas? Cheers in advance!

  2. I did mine with the engine out which made it a whole lot easier, but, once the pipe to tank rubber was off, and th filler cap plate was of you could jiggle the top action of the pipe out though the round access hole, then it was easy to remove and replace the top rubber.
Would be difficult with he engine in but I'm sure do able. Maybe a lot of swearing and a good hour :)

are you saying you've looked for six months for replacement tank to metal pipe piece

I only took.mine off today. thought I'd find one easy at a commercial.vehicle supplier

  7. Yes you can get the metal pipe out through the filler hole.

Also you can take off the firewall and the paint tin lid on the side of the engine bay and do it without taking the engine out

I replaced the bottom rubber pipe with my arm through the paint tin lid and have got the scratches to prove it (a kind of self harming but with a VW van). For the top rubber filler (body to metal pipe) I noticed that the petrol pump nozzles had worn a small hole so I mended it with a bike tyre repair patch from the inside, which will have to do for now. I know, not ideal, but at the top of the pipe it only needs to guide the fuel down, it's not under any static pressure.

  9. The neck I need is only £15 - it's not the £56 bent pipe so it's not all that bad! Rather shocked at the cracking evident on the tank pipe (the pic I posted)

Wow you have done far better than I did tracking something suitable down. That £12 pipe at 57mm internal is far cheaper than I have seen anywhere else. Heritage seem to sell 55mmm internal pipe and cool air 56mm pipe, both charge £50 plus for the pipe with the bend! Nice one

  12. I've used it on two kit cars with no probs :)
