Fuel pump for Fuel Injected 2ltr type 4

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by PeaSoup, Nov 9, 2013.

  1. So had my first breakdown today - fuel pump decided to pack up on the busiest roundabout in Oxford.

Luckily a very nice guy from Oxy Dubbers saw me break down and got me going again well enough to get home (by hammering on the fuel pump!) - was definitely feeling the VW love this afternoon!

I now however need to get a replacement fuel pump, and so my question is, can anyone point me at a good replacement fuel pump for my 2ltr FI type 4 engine?

I've seen the correct Bosch ones (0 580 463 016) available from around the £100 mark, however is there an alternative pump that will do the job without having to spend that much?

The guy who helped me suggested looking on eBay for a Facet pump, which I've done, but there are loads of different Facet ones and I'm not sure what I should be looking for in terms of PSI and throughput for my FI engine.

Any pointers on a good fuel pump to get would be much apprecaited.

    Thanks.

    Contact @NZKid. He has one.

  3. Think there was one on eBay for about 35 quid but I can't remember what it was listed as, being FI it needs to be pretty high psi, can't remember off the top of my head but I think it is about 26 psi you read if the for is working correctly, but the pump itself provides higher pressure than that.

  4. Thanks guys.

Think I'm sorted for a second hand one now, however would like to source a new one too as I'd be happier running a new one on the van and have a working secondhand one in my emergency box.

Thanks for the ebay link - that would have been perfect. Will drop the seller a messge to see if he has more.

Any Vauxhall with FI from the 80's and 90's had the same Bosch pump. (eg mk2 cavalier, mk1 or 2 astra sri or gte etc. ) Thats what i ran on my van. This may help to widen your search.

I was told you can get one for a Caviler MK3 that will fit & do the same job. :)

  8. Grazzer - nope, pretty sure there wasn't a fuel pump. Will go and have a check though just in case I overlooked it.

Thanks Vinnyboy - good to know where else the same ones are used.

  9. I bought one of eBay, cheap, do a search through my tech posts for fuel pump. Worked a treat
    :)

  10. There was one, I'll have a look and see if I can find it!

  11. Thanks everyone.

Have found one on ebay and ordered that. And have also hopefully sourced a secondhand one to have as a spare.

So fingers crossed all sorted now :)

Graham - Have just been through the boxes of parts again and no sign of a fuel pump. Definitely don't remember seeing one as am sure i'd remember as it's the only part of my fuel/ignition system that I didn't have at least one spare of! Not to worry now though as think I'm sorted :)

    That's the one :)

  14. I found a few different options on eBay for around the £40 mark that appear to be clones of the proper Bosch one:

    e.g.
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-3-Bar-130-L-H-External-In-Line-Fuel-Pump-Bosch-X-Ref-0580464070-/111184833364

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/APS-Unive...ump-Bosch-0580464070-Replacement-/40052470816

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TVR-V8-High-Pressure-external-EFI-4FP-type-Fuel-Pump-/130614280718

I went for the cheapest one - the first one above - at £38.95 including delivery.

Will let you know if it works once it arrives! I guess only time will tell if it turns out to be reliable, but as I said in a previous message I've sourced a good second hand one too to keep as a spare just in case...

  15. My £38.95 FI fuel pump from eBay arrived yesterday and I fitted it today.

It's slightly longer than my original one and uses ring connectors rather than spade connectors, but other than that it is the same - exactly the same diameter and so bolted in to the same bracket perfectly, and inlet/outlet connectors the same size.

I've only driven my van to the end of the road and back but so far it appears to work fine. Will give it a bigger test tomorrow!

Only time will tell how well it's built and how long it lasts, but for now it seems really good for the price compared with the cheapest price of £90 I found of a Bosch one.

The one I got was this one:

(missed the 4 off the end of it in my last post)
