fuel residue

  1. hi all.
recently fixed my fuel tank vent pipes (see thread on why to check pipes) but after a short drive out for lunch yesterday i found a small amount of fuel and i mean small in the vent pipe thats above the engine cover. is that normal? is it just fuel vapour re-condensing or is air filter possibly block and not pulling vapours away quick enough. it was a hot day!!!

  2. I don't think you should have any liquid fuel in the breathers should only be vapour.

Not sure how you could get liquid in there, have you filled up recently?

  3. it was only a couple of drops but smelt of fuel, just didnt know if it was vapours that re-condensed into liquid. the fuel tank is probably over half full, but who knows just how much is in..

  4. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Even if the tank is brimmed up to the filler hole, no petrol should be getting into the breathers. Something's wrong and personally I'd want to get to the bottom of it before driving. There are condensing "things" in the air intakes each side of the van, but designed so any condensate runs back to the tank by gravity.

  5. any idea's on whats going on or any idea's on fixing myself.. in my area (south cumbria) i dont seem to find any vw specialists.

  6. Where have you connected the vent pipe to?

As zed said fuel vapour should condense in the metal capules up in the air vents and flow back into the tank

The only way liquid fuel will get further than this is if the condensing capsules have been removed or you have such a strong force of vacum its sucking fuel through when the tank is brimmed

  7. replaced vent pipes as they were cream crackered, one up behind spare wheel, two across back to 't' piece and pipe goes from there to standard air filter box. one point is i have to go up quite a steep twisty road on way home
    cheers

  8. Have you still got the "capsules" in the air vents?

  9. hi
yes the condensers are still in place, when i first bought van wondered what the hell they were.
as i say fixed the vent pipes, they needed doing, dont get smells of petrol. amount of residue just dampened end of finger so thought it was the vapour recondensing in pipe..

  10. Not impossible that you'll get a few damp fumes. The condensers/fuel traps would stop any volume of fuel entering the air box.

If you've got no overpowering petrolly smells, I wouldn't worry about it.

  11. cheers, glad i fixed vent pipes couple of weeks ago though or possibly fuel leaks into engine bay wouldn't of done much good.
